6:00-8:00
I had my very first zoom session with the Mayo Clinic Career Exploration program. This session discussed radiology
and radiologic technology. Unfortunately, the zoom session was cut short due to technical difficulties at the Mayo
Clinic, and I never got to see the actual imaging portion of the zoom session. While the zoom was still up and
functioning, I got to see from a physician’s perspective of a physical exam. I got to examine common abnormalities in
a physical exam ranging from enlarged lymph nodes to supraspinatus. During the radiology portion of the zoom, I
learned about diversity within the field of radiology. There are many types of radiologic technologies including
Ultrasound, X-ray, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), and Computer Tomography (CT). I also learned that
radiologists deal with a variety of patients, and their situations are always different. I really liked that because every
day for a radiologist is not very repetitive.

6:00-8:00
I had another zoom session with the Mayo Clinic Career Exploration program. This session discussed the careers of
surgeons and surgical first assistants. Scrubbing in, gowning procedure, surgical knots, and many other areas of surgery
were discussed in this zoom session. I learned how meticulous the field of surgery is and how important it is to not make
any errors.

6:00-8:00
I had another zoom session with the Mayo Clinic Career Exploration program. This session discussed cardiology,
pulmonology, and respiratory therapy. We discussed common procedures and diagnoses within each career. I
thought it was very interesting because we even got to see real human lungs in a box functioning without a person.

6:00-8:00
I had another zoom session with the Mayo Clinic Career Exploration program. This session discussed the careers of
pathology and histology. I did not realize there is a ton of diversity within the fields of pathology and histology. I liked
how every organ of the body can be studied in pathology and histology, such as the brain, the spinal cord, muscle, skin,
the heart, bone, etc. I liked that a normal day for pathologists and histologists meant every patient’s situation was
different from the previous one.

6:00-8:00
I had another zoom session with the Mayo Clinic Career Exploration program. This session discussed the careers of
sports medicine and physical therapy. We got to discuss realistic situations and discuss the process of diagnosing a
patient. I enjoyed this zoom because there were a variety of cases covering a lot of different components of the body. I
also found it relatable since I am an athlete that has both witnessed and endured countless injuries.

6:00-8:00
I had another zoom session with the Mayo Clinic Career Exploration program. This session discussed the careers of
neurologists and clinical neurophysiology technicians. I got to learn about the different nerves and their impact on the
body. I wish that the presentation would have gone into more detail about the process of becoming a neurologist. If
medical school and residency were required, that might discourage me from entering the neurology field. I did enjoy
getting to see how much of an impact neurology has on an individual, however it did seem intimidating because there is
no room to make errors.

6:00-8:00
I had my last zoom session with the Mayo Clinic Career Exploration program. This session discussed the experience of
medical school and the preparation to become a medical student. The preparation process seemed very difficult, since a
lot of the presenters were from prestigious universities and had very high standardized test scores. These presenters
said they studied copious amounts to prepare them for medical board examinations, which I could not imagine myself
dedicating so much time to studying. Although this session was intimidating, I learned that I have to be passionate
about entering medical school because it is such a commitment, and I will need to prepare myself accordingly.

3:00-4:00
I visited my mentor, Justin Streiff, and watched what a normal day looks like for him. I watched Justin supply athletes
with recovery sessions and injury prevention care. I also observed physical therapy exercises that Justin recommended
to certain individuals. Simultaneously, Justin was tending to injuries and examining individuals to see if they had any
injuries. Some of the most common procedures were wrapping ankles, massage therapy, and taping wrists, hands, and
fingers. Throughout my observation, I made sure to ask questions to enrich my experience.

2:30-3:30
Again I visited my mentor, Justin Streiff, and interviewed him. I asked Justin to describe the process that got him into his
career as an athletic trainer. After I was enlightened by Justin’s personal experience of career-searching. He advised me
to keep my options open and to make sure the career is tailored to me. My future career must be realistic to me. For
example, if I want a family, medical school and residency may not be best for me. Justin also explained to me the
importance of being passionate about my career.

7:45-12:00
I got to observe the radiology program at the Mayo Clinic. I first met the person responsible for organizing radiology
observations at 7:45am. She took me to the radiology department. There I followed various radiologist technicians and
shadowed them from 8am until 11am. The organizer then took me to a new location where I met with the individual
responsible for the radiology program where students learn the ins and outs of radiology. I got to tour classrooms and
ask questions regarding the program. This concluded at 12pm, where I began heading home. I overall really enjoyed this
experience. I got to ask many questions while shadowing and while touring. I was exposed to the Mayo Clinic culture,
and I also enjoyed seeing a variety of patients.
