1. Scope

This document is a replacement for the test procedure AMETP-000093 Issue 1, 04.07.2013.
It is a high performance adhesion test used to determine the durability of exterior painted and
lacquered finishes.
Any deviation from this procedure shall be by written agreement of the AML Materials
Development Team and shall be documented within the report.

2. Risk Assessment

A valid risk assessment must be in place before this test is conducted. Chemicals, materials,
parts and equipment referenced in this document must be used and handled properly. Each
party is responsible for determining proper use and handling in its facilities.

6. Sample Preparation

6.1. Equipment setup:

6.1.1. Equipment parameters must be checked before any set of testing is conducted.
Measured values must be recorded on an equipment log sheet (see 10.1 in
Appendix). The following methods apply for the control of these parameters.
Any change to one of these settings requires the verification that it has not
affected other parameters.

6.1.2. Pressure measurement method.

6.1.2.1. Set pressure to 60 bar ± 3 bar, pressure is to be recorded from the

calibrated pressure gauge on the HPC and must be performed whilst the
lance is activated. Recorded in Bar.

6.1.3. Temperature measurement method.

Water temperature off the nozzle to be 80°C ± 4°C

6.1.3.1. Equip a 15 litre minimum water container with a thermocouple.

6.1.3.2. Close the container using a lid or cover. The cover shall have a hole large
enough for the nozzle assembly to allow spraying into the container.

6.1.3.3. Pre-heat the lance by using the HPC until the system has reached its
operating temperature.

6.1.3.4. Place the nozzle assembly through the hole and spray, ensuring that
the HPC runs for a minimum of 1 minute.

6.1.3.5. Make sure that the thermocouple probe is completely immersed in the
water and record the highest reading in °C.

6.1.4. Water flow rate measurement method.

Water flow to be 7 litres per minute ± 0.5 l/min

6.1.4.1. Using the covered water container, turn on the HPC and measure the
amount of water accumulated in 60 seconds and report the flow rate in
litres / minute.

6.1.5. Note the 6.1.3. Temperature measurement and 6.1.4. Water flow rate can be
conducted at the same time.

6.2. Preparation of the sample:

6.2.1. Where possible, the sample shall be a flat plaque 150 mm x 100 mm and
representative of the system and production process. Where possible at least 3
samples per condition should be tested.

6.2.2. Using the tungsten carbide scribe, X-scribe the finish through to the substrate as
per figure 2. The X-scribe shall be made with as few scribe passes as possible.

Figure 2: X-scribe on the test specimen.

7. Test Procedure

7.1. Make sure that the lance has reached its operating temperature before the test starts.

7.2. Each sample has to be set up in a jig or sample holder in such a way that the sample
does not move or distort during the test.

7.3. Ensure the distance between the end of the nozzle and the sample remains 100 mm ±
5 mm and the stream is always perpendicular to the sample as per figure 3.

Figure 3: Distance and angle of the lance relative to the target.

7.4. Expose the sample to a continuous stream for 120 seconds whilst moving the lance up
and down as per figure 4.

8. Assessment

8.1. The test samples shall be rated using the following grades. If in doubt, take the
average rating of several trained assessors over the use of half grading. Anything
visually worse than Grade 2 should be rated as Grade 3 – severe loss of adhesion.

8.2. Report paint failure mode – i.e. those layers in the paint system where the loss of
adhesion has occurred.
