HYDROTEST PROCEDURE
DATE : 13.02.2018
1.0 SCOPE
1.1 This procedure describes the method of testing and acceptance criteria for
Hydrostatic testing of Pressure Vessels.
3.0 Venting.
Venting of the vessel will be done from the highest point through a vent cock.
4.1) Dial indicating pressure gauges shall be used for hydrostatic testing shall be
graduated over a range of about double the intended maximum test pressure
but in no case shall the range be less than 1 1/2 nor more than 4 times that
pressure.
`
4.2) Pressure gauges shall be calibrated once in six months.
The test pressure shall be as specified in the approved drawing and this
shall be applied to every point in the vessel.
6.0 Procedure
6.1 Entry near the vessel under pressure is restricted to authorized personnel only.
a) All fabrication has been completed, except for operations, which could
not be performed prior to the test such as weld end preparation.
b) All examinations have been performed, except those required after the
test.

6.2 The hydrostatic test fluid will be water mixed with corrosion inhibitor. Water
used for stainless steel vessels shall have chloride content less than 20
PPM. / Potable water will be used as a hydrostatic test fluid for LAS and CS
materials.
6.3 The vessel will be placed at some elevation, which makes easy to carry out
inspection at bottom side of the vessel.
6.4 A vent will be kept at high point of the vessel to purge possible air pockets
while the vessel is filling.
6.5 Except the vent connection and one main opening at the top all other
opening shall be tightly closed while filling the vessel. Water shall be poured
through the main opening until water purges out of the vent connection.
6.6 Care shall be taken to ensure that there is no air trapping inside the vessel.
6.8 Before applying pressure, the test equipment shall be examined to see that it
is tight and that all low pressure filling lines and other appurtenances that
should not be subjected to the test pressure have been disconnected.
6.9 Pressure in the vessel shall be gradually increased to not more than one half
of the test pressure. Thereafter, the test pressure shall be increased in steps
of approximately 1/10th of the test pressure until the required test pressure
has been reached.
6.10 Isolate the pump once the required test pressure is reached.
6.12 During hydrostatic test the metal temperature will be maintained at least
17oC above the Minimum Design Metal Temperature, but need not exceed
48oC.

6.13 Following the application of the hydrostatic test pressure, an inspection shall
be made of all joints and connections. This inspection shall be made at a
pressure not less than the test pressure divided by 1.3. Except for leakage
that might occur at temporary test closure for those openings intended for
welded connections, leakage is not allowed at the time of the required visual
inspection. Leakage from temporary seals shall be directed away so as to
avoid masking leaks from other joints.
Draining will be done by first opening the cock on the top and releasing the
water by opening the drain cock. After draining the water completely, drying
will be done by circulating the compressed air.
8.3 Vessels for lethal service shall not be painted or coated or lined
either internally or externally prior to the hydrostatic pressure test.
