What This Module is About
We are happy to share this module to Grade 4 pupils like you. It
was developed to help you become hands-on and minds-on learners.
The activities that you are going to do can help you learn essential
science concepts and skills through learning by doing. This activities
are fun and simple yet will allow you to think critically. .

In this module, you will learn about the properties and

characteristics of light.

Notes to the Teacher

Dear Teacher,

This is a self-placed module with various

activities to be done at home by the learners.
Provided that clear and careful instructions
must be given to the learners to ensure safety
and avoid misconceptions in performing the
activities.

i
What I Need to Know

Light is very important because is the reason we can see

everything around us. We can see our faces through the aid of a mirror,
a tinted glass or even in the water. Light made it possible.
This module will describe how light reflect and refract.

Learning Objectives:
At the end of this module, you will able to:
1. describe how light is:
a. reflected; and
b. refracted.
2. describe characteristics of light.

How to Learn from this module

To achieve the objectives, you will to do the following:

• Take your time in reading carefully the lessons.

• Follow diligently the directions /instructions in the activities and

exercises.

• Answer all the given tests and exercises.

5ii
What I Know

Direction: Write TRUE if the statement is correct and FALSE if the

statement is not correct.
_____ 1. Light does not reflect on water.
_____ 2. Reflection is the bouncing back of light that strikes the clear
surface.
_____ 3. When you see your face in the mirror, light is reflected.
_____ 4. Light travels faster in air than in liquids.
_____ 5. The drawing shows that light is refracted when it
travels from air to water.

_____ 6. The bending of light happens because light travels faster in

water than in the air.
_____ 7. The speed of light remains the same even if it travels from one
material to another.
_____ 8. All the colors that we see around us come from the light of the
sun.
_____ 9. A rainbow is formed when light from the sun passes through
raindrops.
_____ 10. ROYGBIV is the color of the rainbow.

What’s In

Quick Check!
Direction: Analyze the drawing below. Answer the following questions
based on what you observed in the drawing.

Guide Questions:
1. How many images do you see in the drawing?

2. What materials at home make you see your own image?

7
What’s New

Look at Me!
You will need the following
 mirror (a basin full of water if mirror is not available)
 comb
Directions:
1. Look at yourself in a mirror (a basin full of water, if there is no
mirror available).
2. Look at your face on the mirror (or a basin full of water).
3. Comb your hair in front of the mirror (or basin full of water).
Guide Questions:
1. What did you see when you were in front of the mirror (or a
basin full of water)?

2. Why can see your own image in the mirror/water?

What is It

Learning Circuit

Just as heat and sound travel, so does light. Light travels in

straight lines. Sometimes it bounces back into the direction of the
source. We call this reflection. Water, shiny metals, and mirrors are
just some objects that reflect light.

8
However, when light passes from one material into a
second material like mirror or water, light path is either bent or
reflected back.

Guide Questions:
1. When does reflection of light happen?

2. What happen when light passes from one material into another
material?

What’s More

Complete Me!
Direction: Draw the other half portion of the butterfly.

9
What I Have Learned

Provide Me!
Directions: Complete the sentence below.
In this lesson. I have learned that:
a. light travels in a __________ line.
b. sometimes, light __________ back into the direction of the
source.
c. when light passes from one material into a second material
like mirror or water, light path is either __________ or
__________back.

What I Can Do

Directions: Draw the half portion of the flower.

What’s New

Be a Scientist!
What you need
 clear drinking glass (breakable)
 pencil
 water

11
What to do:

1. Fill ½ of the clear drinking glass with water.

2. Place the pencil in the glass of water.
3. View the pencil from above the drinking glass
by placing your face above the mouth of the
glass.
4. View the pencil from the side of the drinking
glass.
5. Take out the pencil from the water. Look at it.
Feel it. Is it straight or bent?

Guide Questions:
1. Describe the appearance of the pencil when you viewed it
from the top of the glass.

2. Describe the appearance of the pencil when you viewed it

from the side of the glass.

3. Did the appearance of the pencil change when you took it

out of the glass?

What is It

Learning Circuit
As you look at the pencil from the top it appeared straight.
But when viewed on one side, the pencil appeared bent at the water
surface. It even appeared as if it was cut and its lower end was
bigger However, when you took it out of the glass, it was straight.

12
As you look at the pencil, the top part of the pencil came
directly to your eyes. Light rays from the bottom part passed first
through the surface between the water and the air. The rays are
refracted. Refraction is the bending of light as it travels from one type
of material to another like from air to water.

Refraction takes place when light travels from air to water. The
bending of light happens because light travels slowly in water
compared to when it travels in the air.

Guide Question:

Why does the pencil appear bent at the water surface?

What’s More

Guess!
Direction: Below are two drawings. Which of these show refraction?

A B

13
What I Have Learned

Provide Me!
Directions: Provide the missing word. Select your answers from the
words in the box below.

Air Water Refraction

__________ is a bending of light as it travels from one type of

materials to another like from __________ to __________.
(2) (3)

What I Can Do

Direction: Analyze the drawing. Answer the questions below.

Guide Question:
Why do you think the straws were bent?

15
What’s New

Look at Me!
What you need
 clear drinking glass (breakable)
 sheet of white paper
What to do: (Perform this activity between 8:00 to 9:00AM and between
3:00 to 4:00 PM)

1. Place the glass of water on top of a table exposed to bright

sunlight. (You must use an open area in your house that is free
of obstruction from tall trees or building).
2. Place a sheet of white paper on the table. The paper should
be positioned at the back of the glass of water.
3. Observe the rays of the sun that pass through the glass.

Guide Questions:
1. What do you notice about the rays of the sun that pass through
the glass of water when it strikes the paper?

2. What are the different colors that you saw?

3. Where do you usually see such kinds of colors?

16
What is It

Learning Circuit
The colors of the rainbow and all the other colors that we
see around us are colors that come from the light of the sun. A
rainbow is formed when light from the sun passes through
raindrops. That is why we see a rainbow after it rained. A rainbow
is the result of sunlight breaking into different colors.
In the activity, the glass of water reflects light. As the light
bends, it separates into different colors or the colors of the
rainbow which are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and
violet (ROYGBIV).

Guide Questions:
1. Name the different colors of the rainbow.

2. Why can we see a rainbow?

What’s More

Show me your color!

Direction: You may perform which of the activity below is applicable.
Activity 1. Color the rainbow following the color sequence ROYGBIV
Start from the lowest part.

17
Activity 2. Draw a rainbow and color it following the color sequence
ROYGBIV Start from the lowest part.

What I Have Learned

Provide Me!
Direction: Complete the statement.
In this lesson, I learned that:
a. the colors that we see around us are colors that come
from the light of the __________.
b. a rainbow is formed when light from the sun passes
through __________.
c. as the light __________ , it separates into different colors.

What I Can Do

Try Me!
Direction: Observe the following materials and identify the colors they
release.
1. flouresent bulb
2. disco light

18
3. christmas light
4. traffic light
5. car head light

Post Assessment

Direction: Write TRUE if the statement is correct and FALSE if the

statement is not correct.
