Capstone Project Proposal Draft

Name of student: Aime Passarini Date: March 1

Teacher: Ms.Vander Helm and Mr.Weiss Block: D

The Capstone strand I have chosen is Project

Proposed title for my Project Proposal: (write the proposed title for your Capstone Project in one clear
sentence): A complete and full guide to Brazil (To be honest I need a better title this is the part I struggled with
the most for this entire proposal)

What is your inquiry question that interests you for further research? It should be a question that connects with
a purpose, passion or personalized area of interest for you. This is a question that you cannot just google an
answer for. Please see examples from your Capstone booklet.
My inquiry question is:

How might I creatively and engagingly impart knowledge about Brazilian culture to others?

Rationale/context: Detail your reasons for choosing this inquiry question. Explain WHY you are choosing to
investigate this topic as a major area of focus. How does this area of inquiry connect to your passion(s),
purpose? Why is it of personal interest to you?

I have selected this particular inquiry question as I am passionate about sharing the richness of Brazilian
culture in a captivating and engaging manner. As a Brazilian who moved to Canada at the age of 5, I am
determined to explore this subject in great detail because I often feel caught between two worlds. While
Brazilians consider me to be more Canadian, I still struggle to fit in completely with Canadian culture.
Through my investigation of various facets of Brazilian culture, I hope to not only strengthen my connection
with my heritage but also provide valuable insights to others.

Background: What background knowledge/connections/prior learning do you have in this area of inquiry?

I have a significant background knowledge and personal connection to this area of inquiry. Being born in
Brazil, I have a deep understanding of the country's rich culture, traditions, and history. Furthermore, having
had the opportunity to visit several of Brazil's top vacation destinations, I have gained unique insights from
both Brazilian and Canadian perspectives. These experiences have provided me with a wealth of
knowledge and a passion for sharing the beauty of Brazilian culture with others in an engaging and
informative way. Using Canva to create engaging and visually appealing content for the school's Instagram
account this past year will provide me with valuable experience in designing a magazine-style layout.

Career connections: What is your intended career area at this point in time? What connections does this
inquiry question have to your life, academic and/ or career goals?

At this point in time, my intended career area is to become a social media lead, and this inquiry question is
directly connected to my academic and career goals. As a social media lead, I will be responsible for
creating engaging content that captures the attention of a target audience. The skills I will develop by
creating this Brazilian magazine, such as designing visually appealing layouts, selecting interesting topics,

0
and presenting them in a captivating way, will directly translate to my future career. By investigating
different aspects of Brazilian culture and designing a magazine that is both informative and visually
appealing, I will have the opportunity to develop my skills in social media management and create content
that resonates with the target audience.

Interdisciplinary and core competencies connections: What subject areas and core competencies will be
connected with your project? Outline and explain the connections.

My Capstone project will be connected with multiple subject areas and core competencies. In terms of
subject areas, the project will primarily involve language arts and social studies. The language arts
component will involve researching and writing articles for the magazine, as well as editing and revising
those articles. The social studies component will involve researching and writing articles on Brazilian
fashion, music, food, architecture, history, environment, sports, art, and culture.

In terms of core competencies, the project will primarily involve communication, critical thinking, and
personal and cultural identity. The communication competency will be developed through the process of
writing, editing, and publishing the magazine, as well as through engaging with readers and. The critical
thinking competency will be developed through the process of researching, and analyzing information for
the articles. The personal and cultural identity competency will be developed through exploring and
celebrating my Brazilian culture.

Capstone Presentation medium: select one or more project mediums you wish to use to present your
project. Outline and give details about how you will present your project once completed. You may use a
combination of mediums.
o Electronic portfolio: Prezi or PPT
o Physical portfolio
o Website
o iMovie presentation
o YouTube channel

I will create a detailed PowerPoint presentation that showcases my research, design process, and the final
outcome of my Brazilian magazine project. The PowerPoint will include visuals, such as images of the
magazine, infographics, and other design elements, to help convey my ideas and the overall aesthetic of
the magazine. Additionally, I will include notes and annotations to provide context and further explanation
for each slide. I will also create a physical copy of the Brazilian magazine. This will give me the opportunity
to present the magazine in its intended form, allowing viewers to appreciate the design, layout, and content
of the magazine in a tangible way. The physical copy of the magazine will include high-quality printed
images and text that showcase the unique culture and heritage of Brazil. This will provide viewers with a
tangible representation of my research, design, and creativity, allowing them to fully appreciate the beauty
of Brazilian culture. The PowerPoint will allow me to explain the process and details of my project, while the
physical copy of the magazine will give viewers a firsthand look at the final outcome.

Description of my Capstone project. Specific Project Details of the Capstone Project: what will you research,
create, study, produce, solve, investigate? What product will be produced at the end of this project for
evaluation. Write a one-page description outlining your proposal.

For my Capstone Project, I will be creating a Brazilian magazine that showcases the rich and diverse
culture of Brazil. The purpose of the magazine is to educate readers about the beauty and heritage of
1
Brazil, as well as to provide them with valuable information for travel planning. Each section will include
stunning visuals and informative text, allowing readers to gain a deeper understanding of each topic.

To create the magazine, I will conduct extensive research on each of the topics mentioned above,
gathering information from a variety of sources, such as books, online resources, and interviews with
Brazilians. I will also work on developing my design skills, experimenting with different layouts, typography,
and color schemes to create an engaging and visually appealing magazine.

The final product will be a high-quality print magazine, complete with glossy pages and stunning visuals.
Sections on Brazilian culture, and common phrases for travelling abroad will provide valuable resources for
readers, while the stunning visuals and informative text will showcase the beauty and diversity of Brazil.

Overall, my Brazilian magazine project aims to promote cultural awareness and appreciation, while also
providing practical resources for those interested in travelling to Brazil. Through this project, I hope to
develop my research, design, and creative skills, while also sharing my passion for Brazilian culture with
others.

Resources/ Technology/Skills: Make an assessment of the resources, technology and skills you will need to
be able to complete this project. What is your plan to be able to access/learn all of the resources necessary to
achieve completion of this project? Detail your plans.

To complete my Capstone project through Canva, I will require several resources, technology, and skills.
The following are what I have figured out I will need:
Resources:
• High-quality images of Brazil and Brazilian subjects
• Articles and information about Brazilian fashion, music, food, architecture, history, environment,
sports, art, and culture
• Canva software for designing the magazine layout
Technology:
• Computer with internet connectivity
• Canva software
Skills:
• Graphic design skills
• Research skills
• Writing and editing skills
• Project management skills
• Portuguese speaking skills

To access the resources, I plan to conduct extensive research on Brazilian fashion, music, food,
architecture, history, environment, sports, art, and culture. I will also collaborate with Brazilians such as
my family to obtain authentic information and images. For the graphic design skills, I will watch tutorials to
learn how to use Canva effectively if needed. Additionally, I will improve my writing and editing skills
through practice and feedback from peers and my lovely careers teachers.

Regarding technology, I have a computer with internet connectivity, which I will use to access online
resources and the Canva software. If required, I will invest in Canva Pro to ensure high-quality images
and graphics for the magazine. To manage the project effectively, I will use project management tools
and techniques, such as creating a timeline, and breaking down tasks into smaller achievable steps.

2
Mentors/Community Connections: What types of mentor(s)/community connections will you need to help
you complete your capstone project? How will your mentor(s) help you? What is your plan to access the
mentorship/community connections necessary for this project?

For my capstone project, creating this magazine, I will need the guidance and mentorship of individuals
who have experience in the publishing industry as well as a deep understanding of Brazilian culture.
Specifically, I plan to reach out to my Brazilian family and friends, as well as a magazine editor, to
oversee and provide insight on my project. My family and friends in Brazil will be a valuable resource for
me as they can provide me with authentic perspectives on Brazilian culture, including the latest trends,
and popular topics. Additionally, they can offer feedback on the content of the magazine, ensuring that it
accurately reflects the culture. In addition to my family and friends, I plan to reach out to a magazine
editor who can provide guidance on the overall structure and layout of the magazine. An experienced
editor can ensure that the magazine is visually appealing, and effectively communicates its intended
message. To access these mentorship and community connections, I plan to contact my family and
friends as well as make new professional relationships. I will communicate regularly with my mentors,
seeking feedback and guidance throughout the project.

Project limitations: What are some project limitations and potential obstacles that you foresee that might
affect progress with your Capstone Project?

One major obstacle that I foresee is finding a suitable and committed magazine editor to act as my
mentor. If this proves difficult, my backup plan would be to seek the help of a new media English teachers
at school who is knowledgeable and willing to serve as a mentor. Other potential obstacles may include
time constraints, technological issues, and unexpected personal or academic commitments. To address
these limitations, I plan to create a detailed project timeline, regularly communicate with my mentor, and
stay organized and focused throughout the project.

Other considerations: List and detail any other related information/ considerations about your project that you
feel should be included in your project proposal.

Not ordering my magazine on time before my presentation to have it for my presentation.

References: Provide a literature review of 5-10 PEER REVIEWED ACADEMIC references: research, videos,
etc. that offer some preliminary research you have done for your project that shows you are able to access the
key information that you will need to be able to complete this project/work. Your list should be written using
correct APA formatting.
