Past Continuous
1. Ex. 1. I was driving on Lombard Street at this time yesterday.
2. I was baking an apple pie at 1 p.m. yesterday.
ใช้กับเหตุการณ์ที่กำลังเกิดขึ้น ณ ช่วงเวลาใดเวลาหนึ่งในอดีต มักมีคำบอกเวลาที่เจาะจงและชัดเจน เช่น
at this time yesterday (เวลานี้ของเมื่อวาน) at 11 o’clock last night (เมื่อคืนตอน 5 ทุ่ม)

2. Ex. Ava was cooking while her sister was taking a bath.
ใช้กับเหตุการณ์ 2 เหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นพร้อมกันในอดีต มักมีคำเชื่อมประโยค คือ while (ในขณะที่)

3. Ex. 1. We were sleeping when the thief broke into our house.
2. While I was reading a magazine, the doorbell rang.
3. As I was walking down the road, I saw a car accident.
ใช้กับเหตุการณ์ที่กำลังเกิดขึ้นอยู่ในอดีต แล้วมีอีกเหตุการณ์หนึ่งเข้ามาขัดจังหวะ โดยเหตุการณ์ที่กำลังเกิดขึ้นอยู่จะใช้
Past Continuous ส่วนเหตุการณ์ที่เข้ามาขัดจังหวะจะใช้ Past Simple มักมีคำเชื่อมประโยคต่อไปนี้
when (เมื่อ / ตอนที่) + Past Simple
while / as (ในขณะที่) + Past Continuous
เหตุการณ์ที่เข้ามาแทรกทีหลัง หรือ ขัดจังหวะ จะใช้เป็น Past Simple เสมอ

Past Perfect
Example : 1. After I had watched the movie, I took the bus to meet my friend.

2. I had watched the movie before I took the bus to meet my friend.

ใช้ในกรณีที่มีเหตุการณ์2 เหตุการณ์เกิดขึ้นก่อนและหลัง โดยเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นก่อน

ดำเนินมาระยะเวลาหนึ่งและ จบลงแล้ว จะใช้ Past Perfect ส่วนเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดตามมาจะใช้ Past Simple
มักมีคำเชื่อมประโยคต่อไปนี้

before (ก่อน) after (หลังจาก) until (จนกระทั่ง) by the time (ในขณะที่)

***** before + Past simple

after + Past Perfect

ถ้าเกิดเหตุการณ์ 2 เหตุการณ์ก่อนและหลัง Past Simple จะเกิดทีหลังเสมอ
until / by the time + Past Simple
They had never spoken English until their teacher talked to them in class.
By the time I got here, the bus had already left.

Past Perfect Continuous

Example :
1. After I had been taking some photos, I lost my car key.
2. I had been taking some photos before I lost my car key.
3. I had been taking some photos when I lost my car key.
มักใช้ในกรณีที่มีเหตุการณ์ 2 เหตุการณ์เกิดขึ้นก่อนและหลัง โดยเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นก่อน
ดำเนินมาระยะเวลา หนึ่งอย่างต่อเนื่อง และจบลงก่อนที่อีกเหตุการณ์หนึ่งจะแทรกขึ้นมาในอดีต จะใช้ Past Perfect
Continuous
ส่วน เหตุการณ์ที่แทรกหรือเกิดตามมา จะใช้ Past Simple มักจะมีคำเชื่อมประโยคต่อไปนี้
after (หลังจาก) + Past Perfect Continuous
before (ก่อน) + Past Simple
when (เมื่อ / ตอนที่) + Past Simple
*** Past Perfect กับ Past Perfect Continuous คล้ายกันมากต่างกันแค่ “ความต่อเนื่องของเหตุการณ์” เท่านั้น

She had worked for 5 hours before her parents arrived.

She had been working for 5 hours before her parents arrived.
