Notes on Field Practical 1: Parasitoids – 2017

1. All submitted individual practical reports (which should complement the collected
specimens) will be analysed by both Turnitin and Grammarly software to determine
Plagiarism. This exercise will be initiated on the 2nd week of trimester 2 and should be
completed by the 10th week of trimester 2. Students will work individually to study the
five (5) parasitic insects and will submit written report as well as a collection including
at least 2 types of parasitoids.

2. Marking scheme

The layout (please use the given layout) and the marking scheme is as follows:

Summary: (10%)
Introduction (What are parasitoids?): (15%)
Materials and Methods: (10%)
Describe and discuss the results of collecting parasitoids (and this should state the
stage/s of the host attacked) including lessons learnt: (35%)
References (Harvard system only): (10%)

Collected specimens will be examined with a maximum mark of 20%.

3. The summary will encapsulate the effort on studying parasitoids and lessons learnt.

4. Most of the marks will focus on the results of your endeavour. Marks will be given for
creativity and good scientific skills that will cover questions such as:
What do you look for?
How do you keep and how long must you keep field collected specimens?
What did you learn from this exercise?

5. Appropriate references are necessary and the Faculty of Science has opted for a
Harvard approach. Only cited references should be included in the References. Two
(2) quick guides for Harvard referencing are provided.

6. Please note that this practical will be part of the Pest Management course and the
practical is meant to enrich the students in understanding the natural enemies present..
The practical is supported by our tutor, Mr. Tan Jiunn Luh.
