PRE-READING QUESTIONS
1.Have you heard any good stories lately? What is about stories that we find so
appealing?
-Yes, I have. I think the way people tell a story makes us feel interested in. The tone of
voice, the body language and the gestures they use while talking.
2.How persuasive is our use of stories or narratives? Brainstorm examples of narratives
or stories in our daily lives. What useful purposes do they serve in our daily lives?
I think it’s not persuasive at all, we are trying to explain something, or to tell what
happened, so we just need someone who listens to us that pay attention.
- What did you do yesterday?
-How was the meeting?
-How was your day?
-What did you do on the weekend?
In our daily lives, we use it to talk with friends that we don’t see long time ago, also when
we see our parents at home and we tell them about our days. The more detailed is the
story, the more identified may feel the person who is listening.
3.How can the retelling of an event from someone’s life experience provide us with
insight into the world in which we live?
Well, even if we live in the same country and the same city, and go to the same
University, we don’t have the same life. So we can see different point of views from the
exactly same event. When someone is telling a story, we can see while listening how was
that experience, if they like it or not, if they were happy or not. Everyone can have their
own thoughts because what they are, because what they had lived. We can also noticed
how close we are with people, if we don’t know them well, we should omit some details
and just tell important aspects, but when we talk to our best friend or to our family, we
tell every single detail because we feel more confident with them.
4.What role do stories play in our understanding of who we are? In other words, how
do stories help us establish our identities?
Stories can play an important role, because we can notice how we interpret the world. W
POST-READING QUESTIONS
1.What are some advantages of doing inquiry?
-That we have authentic information by the people we interviewed
2.What is the difference between narrative inquiry and life history research?
-Narrative inquiry could be about an event in certain point of our lives, while life history
research follows a line through the people’s life.
3.What are some of the problems or issues a novice researcher should be aware of
before undertaking a life history research project?
-If we are not organized, we can have mixed or incomplete ideas that will end in
misunderstood research. We have to consider also, what the participants feels it’s

important, and avoid writing their own thoughts into the research. The researcher can
highlight aspects of the participants’ experience or choose not to include certain details.
4. How important is to carry out a pilot study?
5.What are two principal methods of eliciting stories (collecting data)?
6. What is the advantage of transcribing the interviews yourself?
TASK
Write the story of your experience learning a second or foreign language. Perhaps you
could begin your story by telling your readers about the first time you were aware of
hearing the language.
