• Do you think the figures illustrates a proportion?
• Are the figures similar? Why?

Two figures are said to be similar if they have the same shape.

Mathematically, two figures are similar if:

1. Their corresponding angles are congruent.
2. The ratios of the lengths of their corresponding sides are equal.
(This common ratio is called the scale factor) The symbol ~ is used to indicate
similarity
Example 1: Determine if the two square pizza boxes are similar.
B. Development
Corresponding Sides Corresponding Angles
All angles of a square are right angle.

The common ratio or scale factor

is 5:2 or

Therefore, the two pizza boxes are similar since their corresponding
sides are proportional and their corresponding angles are congruent.

Example 2: Two roof mounts below are similar.

Determine if
Corresponding Sides Corresponding Angles

The common ratio or scale factor

is 2:1 or

Therefore, the two roof mounts are similar since their corresponding
sides are proportional and their corresponding angles are congruent.

C. Engagement Directions: Solve the given problem.

1. You have a rectangular pan of freshly cooked brownies in a 9 inch by
