What is It
What comes to your mind when you heard the word texture? What does it mean in music? In music, texture is a very
important element. The way piece of music uses each of the elements contribute to the over-all texture of music. It
describes how layers of sound within a piece of music interacts.
Texture refers to the structure of a musical composition showing how many sounds, various layers, or voices heard at the
same time. It is how the melodic and harmonic material are combined in a musical piece. Musical texture can be
described as light or heavy, thick or thin and transparent or dense.
There are three types of texture in music; monophonic, homophonic and polyphonic.
A. Monophonic is the simplest type of musical textures, consisting of a single melody or “tune” which is sung by a single
singer or played by a single instrument.
Solo voice is a type of singing performed by a singer without an accompaniment.
Solo Instrumental refers to any New Age artist performing without vocal accompaniment.
B. Homophonic is the most common texture in music where there is one melody and an accompaniment.
Solo Voice with Accompaniment is a type of singing performed by a singer with an accompaniment, either a guitar, a
piano or any musical instruments.
A duet is a musical composition for two performers in which the performers have equal importance to the piece, often a
composition involving two singers or two pianists.
C. Polyphonic is a type of musical texture consisting of two or more simultaneous lines of independent melody.
