LESSON 1

The Dangers of Cigarette Smoking

Gateway drugs such as cigarettes and alcohol are legal drugs that a non-drug user might try,
which can lead him/ her to more dangerous drugs such as marijuana and shabu.

Since cigarettes and alcohol are readily available and generally accepted in our society, many
people use them for various purposes. Teenagers like you are especially vulnerable because you are
more curious and risk-takers. According to the study done by the National Youth Commission (NYC),
two out of five Filipino teenagers aged 13 to 15 years old smoke cigarettes (Philstar.com, March
6,2012). Furthermore, in a study conducted by an anti-tobacco group in the year 2011, ten Filipinos
die every hour because of tobacco-related diseases. Health experts explained that the continuous
increase in cigarette use and alcohol consumption by Filipino teenagers is due to its very cheap price.

(sph.unc.edu/, n.d.)

Tobacco is a tall, leafy plant, originally grown in South and Central America, but now
cultivated throughout the world. There are many species of tobacco but Nicotiana tabacum or
sometimes called common tobacco is preferred for producing present day cigarettes. Tobacco use has
been recorded as early as 600-900 CE as carved drawings on stones, were discovered in Mexico.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), tobacco smoking and chewing is the second
leading cause of death around the world. It is responsible for the death of one in ten adults around the
worldwide approximately reaching about 5 million deaths in a year.

2
Every time a cigarette is lighted, smoke is emitted. There are three smokes produced by
cigarette smoking namely:

1. Mainstream smoke- refers specifically to the smoke that a smoker directly inhales.
2. Side stream smoke- the smoke that comes out of the lighted end of a cigarette or pipe. This is also
called second-hand smoke or environmental tobacco smoke. This is more dangerous than mainstream
smoke.
3. Third-hand smoke- smoke left for a long time on sofa, beddings, pillow, and other objects. This
smoke also called residual tobacco smoke settles along with dust and can last for months.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classifies second-hand smoke as a Group A

carcinogen. This means that cigarette smoke has substances known to cause cancer humans. Short
exposures to second-hand smoke can also cause changes in a passive smoker’s blood.

THE DANGERS OF ALCOHOL

Alcohol is a colorless, bitter-tasting substance that humans have been consuming since the
ancient times. It comes from plants that underwent fermentation, the process of extracting alcohol from
a plant or some fruit. An example of fermented alcohol is beer. A beer is extracted from grains. On the
other hand, wines are from grapes and other fruits. There are three types of alcohol: isopropyl,
methanol, and ethanol. Isopropyl and methanol are used in laboratories and are poisonous and fatal if
taken. On the other hand, ethanol is also called beverage alcohol. When humans consume this in
unregulated amount it may result to intoxication and alteration of the nervous system.

EFFECTS OF ALCOHOL DRINKING

When alcohol enters the bloodstream, it goes in all parts of the body. The main effect of alcohol
drinking reflects on a person’s central nervous system (CNS). The CNS controls one’s mental
processes, memory, speech, learning, and decision-making. It also affects a person’s senses, feelings,
movement, and breathing.

The amount of alcohol that entered in the bloodstream at a certain period can be measured in
percentages through BLOOD-ALCOHOL CONCENTRATION (BAC) or most often called blood
alcohol level.

VII. ADDITIONAL READINGS

Myths and Facts about Cigarettes and Alcohol

Myths and Facts About Cigarettes

1. Myth: Cigarettes help you think clearly.

Fact: It may seem like you are thinking more clearly, but smoking has no effect on the reasoning
process. Nicotine is the substance in tobacco that is highly addictive. It is both a stimulant and a
sedative to the central nervous system. The initial nicotine “kick,” which stimulates the central nervous
system and causes a sudden release of glucose, is followed by depression and fatigue, leading the
smoker to seek more nicotine.

2. Myth: Cigarettes calm you down.

Fact: Many people believe this, but they really feel better only because they are addicted to nicotine.
As with other addictive drugs, you begin to feel jittery if the level of nicotine in your body drops. If
you are not addicted, cigarettes make you feel nervous.

3. Myth: Smoking keeps you thin.

Fact: Smoking stimulates the central nervous system, which can suppress appetite, but it doesn’t
change eating habits. It can also decrease the sensitivity of the taste buds and sense of smell making
food less appetizing. Overall, this is not an effective way to lose weight as there are many negative
consequences from smoking.

8
4. Myth: It’s easy to quit later.
Fact: Only 3% of daily smokers in high school think they will be smoking in 5 years. But over 60%
are still regular smokers up to 9 years later. Usually people make five to seven attempts before finally
being able to quit.

Myths and Facts About Alcohol

1. Myth: A can of beer will not have as much effect as a mixed drink (or a shot of liquor).
Fact: A can of beer, a glass of wine, a mixed drink, and a shot of liquor all have about the same amount
of alcohol and will have about the same effect.

2. Myth: Alcohol is not a drug.

Fact: Alcohol is a drug that affects the brain. It slows down the brain area that controls judgment,
thought, and muscular coordination. Mixing alcohol with other drugs can be extremely dangerous,
causing nausea, vomiting, fainting, heart problems, difficulty breathing, coma, or even death.

3. Myth: Alcohol is not as dangerous as other drugs.

Fact: Alcohol can be deadly. Drinking a quart of vodka in one sitting can kill you. Even one drink can
affect your judgment and cause you to lose control. Auto crashes are the leading cause of death among
teenagers, and of these fatalities, over one-third are caused by alcohol intoxication.

4. Myth: Black coffee and a cold shower can sober you up quickly.
Fact: Only time sobers you. The liver needs one hour to burn up one ounce of pure alcohol (the amount
contained in a can of beer, glass of wine, or mixed drink). Coffee and cold water may make a person
less sleepy, but neither improves judgment or coordination.

5. Myth: Drinking makes your problems disappear.

Fact: You may feel you have escaped your problems by drinking, but when you get sober, the problems
are still there.
