LESSON 1
Gateway drugs such as cigarettes and alcohol are legal drugs that a non-drug user might try,
which can lead him/ her to more dangerous drugs such as marijuana and shabu.
Since cigarettes and alcohol are readily available and generally accepted in our society, many
people use them for various purposes. Teenagers like you are especially vulnerable because you are
more curious and risk-takers. According to the study done by the National Youth Commission (NYC),
two out of five Filipino teenagers aged 13 to 15 years old smoke cigarettes (Philstar.com, March
6,2012). Furthermore, in a study conducted by an anti-tobacco group in the year 2011, ten Filipinos
die every hour because of tobacco-related diseases. Health experts explained that the continuous
increase in cigarette use and alcohol consumption by Filipino teenagers is due to its very cheap price.
(sph.unc.edu/, n.d.)
Tobacco is a tall, leafy plant, originally grown in South and Central America, but now
cultivated throughout the world. There are many species of tobacco but Nicotiana tabacum or
sometimes called common tobacco is preferred for producing present day cigarettes. Tobacco use has
been recorded as early as 600-900 CE as carved drawings on stones, were discovered in Mexico.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), tobacco smoking and chewing is the second
leading cause of death around the world. It is responsible for the death of one in ten adults around the
worldwide approximately reaching about 5 million deaths in a year.
2
Every time a cigarette is lighted, smoke is emitted. There are three smokes produced by
cigarette smoking namely:
1. Mainstream smoke- refers specifically to the smoke that a smoker directly inhales.
2. Side stream smoke- the smoke that comes out of the lighted end of a cigarette or pipe. This is also
called second-hand smoke or environmental tobacco smoke. This is more dangerous than mainstream
smoke.
3. Third-hand smoke- smoke left for a long time on sofa, beddings, pillow, and other objects. This
smoke also called residual tobacco smoke settles along with dust and can last for months.
SECTION 5. Smoking Ban in Public Places. —Smoking shall be absolutely prohibited in the
following public places:
a. Centers of youth activity such as playschools, preparatory schools, elementary schools, high schools,
colleges and universities, youth hostels and recreational facilities for persons under eighteen (18) years
old;
c. Locations in which fire hazards are present, including gas stations and storage areas for flammable
liquids, gas, explosives or combustible materials;
d. Within the buildings and premises of public and private hospitals, medical, dental, and optical
clinics, health centers, nursing homes, dispensaries and laboratories;
e. Public conveyances and public facilities including airport and ship terminals and train and bus
stations, restaurants and conference halls, except for separate smoking areas; and
a. For any retailer of tobacco products to sell or distribute tobacco products to any minor;
3
b. For any person to purchase cigarettes or tobacco products from a minor;
It shall not be a defense for the person selling or distributing that he/she did not know or was
not aware of the real age of the minor. Neither shall it be a defense that he/she did not know nor had
any reason to believe that the cigarette or any other tobacco product was for the consumption of the
minor to whom it was sold.
SECTION 10. Sale of Tobacco Products Within School Perimeters —The sale or distribution of
tobacco products is prohibited within one hundred (100) meters from any point of the perimeter of a
school, public playground or other facility frequented particularly by minors.
A comprehensive air quality management policy and program which aims to achieve and
maintain healthy air for all Filipinos.
THE DANGERS OF ALCOHOL
Alcohol is a colorless, bitter-tasting substance that humans have been consuming since the
ancient times. It comes from plants that underwent fermentation, the process of extracting alcohol from
a plant or some fruit. An example of fermented alcohol is beer. A beer is extracted from grains. On the
other hand, wines are from grapes and other fruits. There are three types of alcohol: isopropyl,
methanol, and ethanol. Isopropyl and methanol are used in laboratories and are poisonous and fatal if
taken. On the other hand, ethanol is also called beverage alcohol. When humans consume this in
unregulated amount it may result to intoxication and alteration of the nervous system.
When alcohol enters the bloodstream, it goes in all parts of the body. The main effect of alcohol
drinking reflects on a person’s central nervous system (CNS). The CNS controls one’s mental
processes, memory, speech, learning, and decision-making. It also affects a person’s senses, feelings,
movement, and breathing.
The amount of alcohol that entered in the bloodstream at a certain period can be measured in
percentages through BLOOD-ALCOHOL CONCENTRATION (BAC) or most often called blood
alcohol level.

4. Myth: It’s easy to quit later.
Fact: Only 3% of daily smokers in high school think they will be smoking in 5 years. But over 60%
are still regular smokers up to 9 years later. Usually people make five to seven attempts before finally
being able to quit.
1. Myth: A can of beer will not have as much effect as a mixed drink (or a shot of liquor).
Fact: A can of beer, a glass of wine, a mixed drink, and a shot of liquor all have about the same amount
of alcohol and will have about the same effect.
4. Myth: Black coffee and a cold shower can sober you up quickly.
Fact: Only time sobers you. The liver needs one hour to burn up one ounce of pure alcohol (the amount
contained in a can of beer, glass of wine, or mixed drink). Coffee and cold water may make a person
less sleepy, but neither improves judgment or coordination.
