LITURGY OF THE WORD

FIRST READING

C: Our salvation hinges on our faith in Jesus Christ, the incarnate

Son of God and source of our eternal life. Today St. John tells us
that this faith rests on God’s witness given at Jesus’ baptism and
at his death on the Cross. There can be no greater witness than
this.

Reader: 1st Reading – 1 John 5 : 5 – 13

5
A reading from the first Letter of John.

Beloved: Who indeed is the victor over the world but the one who
believes that Jesus is the Son of God? This is the one who came
through water and Blood, Jesus Christ, not by water alone, but by
water and Blood. The Spirit is the one who testifi es, and the Spirit
is truth. So there are three that testify: the Spirit, the water, and
the Blood, and the three are of one accord. If we accept human
testimony, the testimony of God is surely greater. Now the
testimony of God is this, that he has testifi ed on behalf of his
Son. Whoever believes in the Son of God has this testimony within
himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar by not
believing the testimony God has given about his Son. And this is
the testimony: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
Whoever possesses the Son has life; whoever does not possess
the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you so
that you may know that you have eternal life, you who believe in
the name of the Son of God.

The Word of the Lord.

ALL: THANKS BE TO GOD.

Responsorial Psalm – Psalms 147 : 12 – 13, 14 – 15, 19 – 20

R. Praise the Lord, Jerusalem!

6
Glorify the Lord, O Jerusalem; praise your God, O Zion. For he has
strengthened the bars of your gates; he has blessed your children
within you.

R. Praise the Lord, Jerusalem!

He has granted peace in your borders; with the best of wheat he
fills you. He sends forth his command to the earth; swiftly runs his
word!

R. Praise the Lord, Jerusalem!

He has proclaimed his word to Jacob, his statutes and his
ordinances to Israel. He has not done thus for any other nation;
his ordinances he has not made known to them.

R. Praise the Lord, Jerusalem!

C: As the time came for Jesus to begin his apostolic life, he was
introduced to the people in a most solemn way by the river
Jordan. John the Baptist proclaimed that Jesus was much more
important than he; no less than God the Father declared him to be
His beloved Son.

Please rise.

Alleluia – Mark 9 : 6
R. Alleluia, alleluia.

C: The heavens were opened and the voice of the Father

thundered: This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.

R. Alleluia, alleluia.
7
Gospel – Mark 1 : 7 - 11

P : The Lord be with you.

All : AND WITH YOUR SPIRIT.

P : A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark.

All : Glory to you, O Lord

This is what John the Baptist proclaimed: “One mightier than I is

coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs
of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you
with the Holy Spirit.” It happened in those days that Jesus came
from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John.
On coming up out of the water he saw the heavens being torn
open and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him. And a
voice came from the heavens, “You are my beloved Son; with you
I am well pleased.”

P : The Gospel of the Lord.

C. / All : PRAISE TO YOU O LORD JESUS CHRIST.

PREFACE OF CHRISTMAS II

P : It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always
and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, holy Father, almighty
and eternal God, through Christ our Lord. For on the feast of this
awefilled mystery, though invisible in his own divine nature, he
has appeared visibly in ours; and begotten before all ages, he has
begun to exist in time; so that, raising up in himself all that was
cast down, he might restore unity to all creation and call straying
humanity back to the heavenly Kingdom. And so, with all the
Angels, we praise you, as in joyful celebration we acclaim:

SANCTUS

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of power and might

13
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord.

Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna in the highest!

C: Please all kneel.

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER II

You are indeed Holy, O Lord, the fount of all holiness.

Make holy, therefore, these gifts, we pray, by sending down your
Spirit upon them like the dewfall, so that they may become for us
the Body and +Blood of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

At the time He was betrayed and entered willingly into His

Passion,
He took bread and giving thanks, broke it, and gave it His
disciples, saying:

TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND EAT OF IT, FOR THIS IS MY

BODY WHICH WILL BE GIVEN UP FOR YOU.

In a similar way, when supper was ended, He took the Chalice

and, once more giving thanks, He gave it to His disciples, saying:
14

TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND DRINK FROM IT, FOR THIS IS
THE CHALICE OF MY BLOOD, THE BLOOD OF THE NEW AND
ETERNAL COVENANT, WHICH WILL BE POURED OUT FOR
YOU AND FOR MANY FOR THE FOGIVENESS OF SINS. DO
THIS IN MEMORY OF ME.

P : Let us proclaim the mystery of faith

MEMORIAL ACCLAMATION (To be sung or recited)

WE PROCLAIM YOUR DEATH, OH LORD, AND PROFESS

YOUR RESURRECTION, UNTIL YOU COME AGAIN.

P: Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of His Death and

Resurrection, we offer You, Lord, the Bread of Life and the Chalice
of salvation, giving thanks that You have held us worthy to be in
Your presence and minister to You.

Humbly we pray that, partaking of the Body and Blood of Christ,

we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit.

Remember, Lord, your Church, spread throughout the world, and

bring her to the fulness of charity together with Francis our Pope
and Dennis our Bishop and all the clergy.
15
Remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in
the hope of the Resurrection especially Pope Emeritus Benedict
XVI, and all who have died in your mercy: welcome them into the
light of your face. Have mercy on us all, we pray, that with the
Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with Blessed Joseph, her
Spouse, with the blessed Apostles and all the Saints who have
pleased you throughout the ages, we may merit to be co-heirs to
eternal life, and may praise and glorify you through your Son.
Jesus Christ.

Through Him, and with him, and in him, O God, almighty Father,
and the unity of the Holy Spirit, and glory and honor is yours, for
ever and ever.

All : AMEN (to be sung or recited)
