List 2 things (cases) that you have done that will fail the Kantian test of Autonomous Will. Explain clearly how each
case fails the test.

1. During my birthday, I planned to treat my classmates on a certain restaurant in San Fernando. I have already
told my parents that this particular restaurant will be our destination but due to unforeseen circumstances, we
were unable to go to the restaurant and opted to go to a café in Angeles. I have the autonomy to decide where
we will eat but the problem that arose was I chose not to tell my parents that I will be going to Angeles, I didn’t
message or call, that resulted in them worrying and I also came home late.

In this case, I have the autonomy to message, I had the option to communicate with my parents, I was also
allowed to go anywhere but I had been taken by my desires for enjoyment and disregarded my parent’s orders
and feelings.

2. During our duty in the hospital, a lot of patient would ask us, thinking that we are also staff nurses in the area
but in truth we are only student nurses and only focusing on our patient. We have the option to interact with
other patients on the ward but we prefer not to, to avoid any problems. One time I was asked by a patient, I
didn’t notice her, but I heard her and I know she was talking to me, but I chose to ignore her due to me being
shy and afraid of any repercussions.

In this case, we have been allowed to interact with other patients, but due to my fear, I did not have the chance
to answer the patient’s question. I have the option to do my duty as a student nurse and help the patient but
fear and anxiety overcame in me.

In each ethical case, what do you think you should have done?

In the first case, I should have communicated with my parents and told them where I was or where I was going.
In the second case, I have to be more confident and accommodating; I should not let my fear overcome my duty
as a student nurse.
