CLC 12

Capstone Proposal

Growing up, one should dip their toe in many sports and activities to find their passion,
but in this current generation, the only thing children are interested in is mindless games on their
iPad. This thought began a question: What is stopping them from finding this passion that was so
important to me as a child? This question developed my CLC 12 Capstone idea, which is
branching from my passion for competitive swimming.
To launch my research for this project I started with an inquiry question: How can an
experienced athlete inspire the younger generation to reach their goals through educational
media? This research question has given me at least three pillars of knowledge to find; teaching
methods, swimming stroke development and “how to build a YouTube channel.” To gain these
pillars of knowledge for my capstone I plan to use primary sources like people in my community
like coaches, teachers and teammates and secondary sources such as Google Scholar or JStore
for articles, books, and research papers.
When it came down to how I will express my learning and inquiries, I brainstormed ideas
of how not only younger generations could reach my content, but everyone. This led me to the
conclusion of a YouTube channel. This channel will include several videos outlining/teaching
each competitive swim stroke, starts and turns, as well as YouTube shorts with a “vlog” spin on
them. These vlogs will include the lifestyle of an athlete which means diet, “a day in my life”
and gym training for swim-specific muscle groups. Because I will be creating a channel tailored
to my design choices, I will also need to develop editing skills and find a well-known editing
application that can tailor to my needs.
Along the way, there will be obstacles I am planning for. One of these obstacles will be
finding a GoPro to enhance my videos and give more of a personal experience for the viewers. I
will also most likely need to ask the pool for permission to record my swimming, and any
“extras” if I am allowed to post these on the internet. If these people disagree to post it, I will
need to learn blurring techniques.
At the end of this process, I hope to inspire people to get involved in something they can
find health and passion in, just as I have with swimming. The YouTube channel will have the
ability to educate and encourage my community, even if in the end it is not in swimming.
