PURPOSE: Lindon B. Johnson (LBJ), was the 36th president of the US, who obtained this
position after the assassination of John F. Kennedy, in 1963. During his tenure from 1963 to
1969, he passed several laws, which helped many Americans, especially young, discriminated,
and low-income people. Some of the most outstanding legislations approved during his
presidency were Tax-cut Act, Civil Rights Act, Medicare program, Clean Air Act, and
Elementary and Secondary Act. All these documents, along with others written during LBJ’s
political career, are being preserved at the LBJ library at The University of Texas campus in
Austin. For this reason, it is important that students from DLIELC visit and learn more about
American political history, and how this has shaped the US present.
