Assignment 3: Virtues, Vices and Habits of a Healthcare Provider

Questions for the Activity: (Individual Essay and minimum of 300 words for each
question excluding citation with references)

1.What do you think will happen to the health care profession when it is
practiced by professionals who resort to fraud, pride and greed? Explain your
answers and provide actual and real-life concrete examples.

The health care profession is one of the most important and respected
professions in the world. It is a field that requires extensive training, education,
and experience to be able to provide quality care to patients.
However, when this profession is practiced by people who resort to fraud,
it can have devastating consequences for both patients and the industry as a
whole. Fraudulent practices in healthcare can lead to misdiagnosis, mistreatment,
and even death of patients. It can also result in financial losses for insurance
companies and government programs such as Medicare and Medicaid. This can
ultimately lead to increased costs for patients seeking medical care. Furthermore,
fraudulent practices tarnish the reputation of the healthcare profession. Patients
may lose trust in healthcare providers, leading them to delay seeking necessary
medical treatment or avoid it altogether. Fraudulent practices within the
healthcare industry pose a significant threat to patient safety and the integrity of
the profession. It is crucial that measures are taken to prevent such practices
from occurring so that patients receive quality care from trustworthy
professionals.
Pride can lead to arrogance and a lack of empathy towards patients.
Healthcare professionals who are focused on their own self-importance may
neglect the needs of their patients or dismiss their concerns. It is essential for
healthcare professionals to remain humble and empathetic towards their patients
while working collaboratively with others in their field. Only then can we ensure
that patients receive the best possible care.
Greed can lead to unethical practices such as overcharging patients,
prescribing unnecessary treatments or medications, and even withholding
necessary care for financial gain. If greed becomes prevalent in the health care
profession, it will erode trust between patients and healthcare providers. Patients
may become hesitant to seek medical attention due to fear of being taken
advantage of financially. Additionally, healthcare providers who prioritize profit
over patient care may neglect their duties and responsibilities towards their
patients. Ultimately, if greed takes hold in the health care profession, it will
undermine its fundamental purpose - to provide quality care for those in need. It
is essential that healthcare providers prioritize ethical behavior and patient-
centered care over financial gain to ensure that the integrity of the profession
remains intact.
An example is the Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, August 17) — A total of 51
hospitals with fraud cases have received around ₱1.49 billion from the Philippine
Health Insurance Corporation, a House panel chair bared on Monday.
During the joint hearing of the House Committee on Public Accounts and
Committee on Good Government and Public Accountability, Anakalusugan
Partylist Rep. Mike Defensor said the hospitals received ₱1,493,554,124 from its
interim reimbursement mechanism (IRM) despite pending resolution on their
fraudulent cases.
The IRM, an emergency fund advanced to hospitals in case of "fortuitous events"
such as floods and typhoons, was suspended last week due to numerous
irregularities.
In his presentation, Defensor said that from 2013 to 2020, there were 4,664
recorded fraudulent cases by various health care institutions. These include
padding and post-dating of claims, and fabricating necessary documents, among
others.
“Sa mata ng publiko...kung ganito na may mga fraud cases ang mga ospital at
institusyon at bibigyan pa rin ng pondo ng PhilHealth, nakakatakot itong
batayan, nakakatakot itong ehemplo,” Defensor said.

2.List down some possible damages that fraud, pride, and greed may bring to
the Healthcare profession.

Fraud, pride, and greed are three vices that can have a devastating impact
on the healthcare profession. The healthcare industry is one of the most
important industries in the world, and it is essential that it operates with integrity
and honesty. However, when fraud, pride, and greed enter the picture, they can
cause significant harm to patients and healthcare providers alike. One possible
damage that these vices may bring to the healthcare profession is a loss of trust.
Patients rely on their healthcare providers to provide them with accurate
diagnoses and effective treatments. When fraud or greed enters into the
equation, patients may lose faith in their providers' abilities to deliver quality
care. Another potential damage is financial harm. Fraudulent billing practices or
embezzlement can lead to significant financial losses for both patients and
healthcare providers. Finally, pride can lead to a lack of collaboration among
healthcare professionals. When individuals are more concerned with their own
success than working together for the good of their patients, patient care may
suffer as a result. Healthcare professionals who believe they know better than
their patients may fail to listen to them, resulting in misdiagnosis or
mistreatment.
In conclusion, fraud, pride, and greed have no place in the healthcare
profession. It is essential for all those involved in this industry to prioritize honesty
and integrity above personal gain in order to ensure that patients receive the best
possible care. Any deviation from ethical standards will result in severe
consequences that could damage both the reputation of individual practitioners
and the healthcare industry as a whole. They can lose credibility and find it
difficult to find work or pair up in the future. And due to fraud and greed,
healthcare providers may be overworked and underpaid, creating poor working
conditions and lower-than-expected care quality. Pride and greed may influence
healthcare professionals to take unethical actions that jeopardize patient care and
safety. This can negatively affect how the general public views the healthcare
industry and damage its reputation.

3. Do you think the Filipinos, as a people will tolerate healthcare providers who
will resort to fraud, pride and greed? Why or why not?

Filipinos value honesty and integrity. Healthcare providers who resort to

fraud will not be tolerated by the majority of Filipinos. The healthcare industry is
one of the most important sectors in the country, and it is crucial that healthcare
providers act with utmost professionalism. Fraudulent activities such as
overcharging patients, falsifying medical records, and prescribing unnecessary
treatments are not only illegal but also unethical. These actions undermine the
trust between healthcare providers and patients, which is essential for effective
treatment. Filipinos have a strong sense of community and family values. They
prioritize the well-being of their loved ones above all else. Healthcare providers
who engage in fraudulent activities jeopardize the health and safety of their
patients. The government has implemented strict regulations to prevent fraud in
the healthcare industry, but it is ultimately up to individual healthcare providers
to uphold ethical standards. Those who choose to engage in fraudulent activities
will face consequences from both legal authorities and society as a whole.
Filipinos value respect and humility, which are essential traits in healthcare
providers. Pride is not something that is easily tolerated in the Filipino culture,
especially when it comes to healthcare. Healthcare providers who resort to pride
may be seen as arrogant and unapproachable. This can lead to a breakdown in
communication between the provider and patient, which can ultimately affect the
quality of care given. Patients may feel uncomfortable or intimidated by a
provider who displays prideful behavior. Furthermore, pride can also lead to
medical errors or misdiagnosis as the provider may be unwilling to admit mistakes
or seek help from colleagues. This can have serious consequences for the
patient's health.
The idea of healthcare providers resorting to greed is not only unethical but also
goes against the very essence of what it means to be a healthcare provider.
Filipinos have always placed a high value on the well-being and health of their
loved ones. They expect their healthcare providers to provide quality care without
any ulterior motives. Healthcare providers who resort to greed are seen as
individuals who prioritize profit over patient care, which is unacceptable. The
Filipino culture values honesty, respect, and compassion. Healthcare providers
who embody these values are highly respected and trusted by the Filipino people.
On the other hand, those who resort to greed are seen as untrustworthy and may
face consequences such as losing patients or even legal action.
