2. Deserved Grade
2.1 Prelim - 90
2.2 Midterm - 93
2.3 Final - 98

Final Grade = 94

I've been certain during the prelims that I deserve a grade of 90. I was able to earn
a high mark on my examinations and participate fully in our class discussions even
though we had little time to discuss and comprehend each topic that was delivered by our
outstanding professor. In addition, I completed all the tasks that were assigned to us and
turned them in on time, so I am confident that I deserve that grade.

3
Wesleyan University-Philippines (WUP)
Cushman Campus, Mabini Ext., Cabanatuan City Nueva Ecija

When it comes to the midterm phase, I am aware that I am lacking in class

participation because I did not fully understand the topics. However, when it comes to
complying with the tasks assigned to us, I am aware that I did well because I completed
them as soon as my professor instructed me to or posted them in our gc. Additionally, I
am confident in my exam performance because I thoroughly reviewed all the material.
Finally, regarding my attendance, I joined the meeting ahead of schedule 10 minutes
before it began—and did not miss any discussions, not even the cluster ones. So, I think I
truly deserve a grade of 94.

The final phase was my favorite because I was able to understand every topic that
each group discussed and reported about. Because of the compliments that were offered
by our respected professor, I am also confident that we presented our synthesis of making
an informed decision well. I was confident in my capacity to adequately describe or
discuss my part.  Still maintaining perfect attendance, never missing a class, and never
being late. I also performed well on my exam because I really studied for it. Additionally,
I completed my tasks on time, which is why I believe I get to have a grade of 98.
The total after adding the three stages of this semester—90, 94, and 98—will be
282. It equals a grade of 94 if we divide it by the entire semester. My final score for GEC
7 Ethics, under Professor Sonia M. Capio, would be 94

Justification:
1. Competence

1.1 Attitude

I take responsibility of my learning as a student, and I'm eager to learn new things

and expand my knowledge. I also respect my teachers and my fellow students because
they are the people I can trust with my academics, which is why I continue to be
optimistic and work hard. A positive attitude enables you to learn while calming,
recalling, concentrating, and absorbing knowledge. You're prepared to embrace new
experiences and acknowledge a variety of learning possibilities. That is why I choose to
be always positive.

1.2 Skills

One of my best assets that I have identified is my capacity for flexibility under
any situations. Another is that I have a high level of stress tolerance, which I have
effectively increased. Due to the fact that studying at a university for my chosen course in
nursing occasionally entails feeling under pressure from challenging coursework,
studying for exams, and other factors. Finally, in my opinion, my level of self-worth and
4
Wesleyan University-Philippines (WUP)
Cushman Campus, Mabini Ext., Cabanatuan City Nueva Ecija

confidence is average. I do, however, think that by doing more and more presentations at
my school, I will be able to enhance those abilities. I believe that I have so much room
for improvements. And those skills will help me achieve my dreams in the future.

1.3 Knowledge

I strongly believe that knowledge is one of the things that can help us succeed.
You can learn it through your teachers, parents, peers, and professors. To succeed, one
must not only be knowledgeable about a given subject but also understand how to use
that knowledge successfully. Especially us student nurses, it is essential to comprehend
the aspects of a subject and how to apply it in the real world. Since the lives of our
patients are on the line, we must put our academic knowledge and skills to use. Because
of this, we should adapt and use what we have learned as well as future lessons.

3.2 Written Activities & Reflections

a. Getting to know me

My Existence

"I like criticism. It makes you strong." - LeBron James.

My parents explained that they just wanted to give me the name "Angel" when I
questioned them about it. But when I turned to confront my grandparents, they explained
that my parents believed I was a gift from God sent to them, an angel. Given that my
parents and I were never truly honest with one other about our feelings, I was really
touched when I first heard that. Even though I had been their only kid for 17 years, we
didn't become this close until they had my brother, who is now 2 years old.

Aside from becoming a nurse, my dream was to play volleyball professionally. I

had a dream of performing in front of a large crowd while pursuing my passion. It was
introduced to me by my parents, who also taught me how to play, and it has since grown
to become my absolute passion. Not until the pandemic broke out did, I realize that I
should just concentrate harder on my goal of being a nurse. I received a lot of criticism
7
Wesleyan University-Philippines (WUP)
Cushman Campus, Mabini Ext., Cabanatuan City Nueva Ecija

for having such high ambitions, but they had no idea that this simply encouraged me. My
parents have always been incredibly proud of me and supportive of my efforts.

I want to focus on our experiences in the early months of the pandemic, when my
family and I were struggling, and my father was working a long distance away. It is quite
challenging to obtain an adequate night's sleep knowing that your loved ones are far away
and putting their lives in danger to carry out their duties to provide for the family. My
current thoughts were on how I should stand up for him, support him wholeheartedly, and
continue to pray and hope that this pandemic would eventually come to a stop so that
everything may return to as it was before. Of course, I shouldn't have been thinking
negatively at that particular time. The most significant lesson that this pandemic has
taught us is that we must always be there for one another because, in the end, family will
be the only people who stick by you through highs and lows. For this reason, I have to
say that I am proud of my family. I would still choose to remain with them even if I were
to live a different life since they are valuable and irreplaceable to me.

This horrible pandemic period became the catalyst for my desire to become a
nurse someday to intensify even further. It makes me feel more like the woman who, one
day, I know, will transform society. It's not due to anyone's influence that I have dreams
of working as a nurse in the future; rather, it's just how I picture myself. My choice to
pursue a BSN is more of a calling than a career. I've already made up my mind about the
path or course I'll take once I start college, which is why I've decided to pursue a BSN
right now. Being a nurse is not an easy job, but no career is, either.

Nevertheless, it is possible to succeed in them. One of the difficult courses I'm
doing is nursing, but here I am, accepting the difficulties and striving to overcome them
in order to succeed in the field in the future. Not just my family, but everyone who
requires medical care and support is someone I want to help.

In a day, despite the criticism I've got, I'll be the one who can make her parents
proud and contribute significantly to society. I'll work hard, be sincere, dedicated,
compassionate, trustworthy, optimistic, creative, responsible, and many more qualities.
I'll be the kind of person who gives her family and God all her success. I pledge that I
won't let this just be a plan, but rather that I will be the person I've always wanted to be
and that I am capable of becoming even better than that person.

I've finally decided to accept everyone's criticisms of my goals and aspirations.

They seem to be supplements to help me on my road toward becoming who I want to be
and to stop me from working too hard. I want to thank my family and the critics of my
abilities. Considering that I think I'm an angel that God sent from heaven and that I'm
here for a reason. Nothing can prevent me from doing what I love, either.

b. Creating your own maxim

“If it’s important to you, you’ll find a way. If not, you’ll find an excuse.”

I believe that if you truly desire something, you will work hard to get it. I'm here
to pursue this course because of that. We are all aware of how difficult, challenging, and
demanding this profession is, but I think my determination and desire to continue my
path as a student nurse are enough. There are times when I doubt my ability to do my
work, but I push through and do it in the end since I gave up a lot for it, and I will soon
see the results of my perseverance. I therefore do believe that if you truly desire
something, you will always find a way to obtain it or achieve it.

According to Google, an excuse is a justification offered to mask the true

motivation behind a behavior. But as a nursing student, I don't know how to use the word
"excuse”. We always find an explanation. Why we are unable to do so in time. If you
truly want success, there are no justifications for not working for it. We should take
advantage of the fact that we get up every day; while it is acceptable to take a nap,
making up reasons is not. Since the first day I understood it, I have known that my true
9

passion is nursing, and when the opportunity arises, I plan to pursue that career. And now
that my family provides everything I need, I want to achieve this and receive the fruit of
my hard works and the sacrifices I made, I will bring back the hard work that they gave
to me just to pursue what I want, with no excuses

c. Utilitarianism Reflection

A moral theory known as utilitarianism supports activities that increase happiness

or pleasure and disapproves of those that increase sadness or harm. When making social,
economic, or political decisions, a utilitarian ideology would aim for the better good of
society as a whole. Utilitarianism holds that a deed is morally right if it increases the
happiness of the greatest number of persons within a community or group. As a
prospective moral theory, utilitarianism is based on the fundamental tenet that "the
rightness of an action is defined by the quantity of happiness, it produces, and the
wrongness of an action is defined by the amount of negativity, it causes," according to
Mill.

Actions that maximize an individual's happiness and well-being are typically used
in utilitarianism. It is a kind of consequentialism, which holds that each action's results
are either good or bad. It takes into account all human interests equally. People who are
concerned about everyone who is able to suffer and who is able to improve their life are
known as utilitarianism. It also describes behaviors that aim to reduce suffering and
increase pleasure. This theory is founded on the explanation that the effects of an activity
10
Wesleyan University-Philippines (WUP)
Cushman Campus, Mabini Ext., Cabanatuan City Nueva Ecija

transcend all other considerations and that a consequence of an action justifies the moral
acceptability of means to achieve an aim.

According to utilitarianism, it is ethical to sacrifice one individual in order to save
an entire society because doing so will maximize everyone's happiness. Personal
relationships are not considered by utilitarianism. Every adherent of utilitarianism has a
moral obligation to assist those in need without considering the repercussions. The three
guiding principles of utilitarianism are as follows: happiness or pleasure is the sole object
with intrinsic worth; all activities that increase happiness are right; all actions that
decrease happiness are wrong. Everyone's happiness is equally important.

d. Natural Law (Reflection)

Based on what I recall from the discussion from yesterday, Thomas Aquinas, a
monk, studied Aristotle's philosophy in the 1300s. His explorations or research served as
the foundation for his Natural Law. On the concept that nearly everything God created is
good, Natural Law is predicated, which implies that if everything God created serves its
nature, it would be good since its nature is good. The natural law is an unalterable
foundation in accordance with the deontological viewpoint, which maintains that God
endowed nature with morality. As a result, according to my reading of the Natural Law,
because people have free will and intelligence, it must be applied to our situation more
accurately. Humans have a natural tendency to act independently to achieve our desired
outcomes. Humans must use their innate sense to decide what is best for themselves to
achieve the objective that our nature drives us toward. Additionally, we should exercise
our freedom by making decisions based on what is right for our character and what
reason deems to be universal to all of us.

Aquinas was particularly drawn to Aristotle's ideas regarding the primary source
and the essential movement. Everything's final shape serves as its ultimate objective, and
11
Wesleyan University-Philippines (WUP)
Cushman Campus, Mabini Ext., Cabanatuan City Nueva Ecija

this is the only thing that motivates the rest of the universe. He derived five conclusions
from this: first, that God created all of nature; second, that everything in nature has a
purpose; third, that the failure of an essence to develop in a way that serves its function is
inadequate; fourth, that God's moral standards or rules are understandable; and fifth, that
natural law is a component of God's divine mission. Roman’s chapters 2 and 3 of the
Bible include the apostle Paul's explanation of natural law. I keep trying to understand the
idea behind this natural law, and even while not all have received the law of God as did
God's people on Mount Sinai, all people have an innate sense of

moral rightness to which one's morals testifies. Because of this, everyone and everything
is subject to God's rightful judgement. To sum up, to better us and accomplish our
purpose or ultimate objective, we must adhere to certain natural laws.

The importance of Natural law in the Catholic tradition must be mentioned as I
end this reflection. As a fundamental part of Catholic tradition, it has still frequently been
misunderstood and even abused. These fallacies were the main reason why many people
who argued against us abandoning the concept of natural law did so. Often, what we want
to get rid of is something that we should be rejecting. Understanding the idea, reality, and
limitations of natural law is essential.

e. Reflection: Why BSN as my course? How can you help improve the healthcare
system for the Filipino masses? What government actions do you wish to be done
now?

“Every nurse was drawn to nursing because of a desire to care, to serve, or to

help.”
I always envisioned myself being a nurse when I was younger. Throughout my
childhood doctor visits, I was always fascinated by the level of respect that was shown to
nurses. The chance to care for others, the pay, and benefits that the profession offered, as
well as the work security and flexibility, are just a few of the numerous factors that led
me to choose nursing as my profession. The capacity to provide care for someone other
than myself is one of my key motivations for pursuing nursing. Typically, nurses have a
compassionate nature that aids in the recovery of those who are ill, whether they are
suffering from a physical or mental condition. Additionally, nurses assist in educating a
lot of patients about various health issues that might make them feel better. Also, it
demonstrates the concern nurses have for their patients' wellbeing because they would not
spend the time educating a patient about their illness if they did not believe it would be
helpful. I know that I am driven enough and have the desire to truly care for and help

12
Wesleyan University-Philippines (WUP)
Cushman Campus, Mabini Ext., Cabanatuan City Nueva Ecija

others, and I am confident that I will continue to work toward this goal for as long as I am
capable.

As a student, I observed that we lack in facilities and hospitals so we should

upgrade medical facilities and hospitals. We must deal with this issue since it is the most
basic. How can we care for our people if we lack the facilities, tools, and medications?
To change this, we must not only increase the budgets of these hospitals, but also hire
qualified, forward-thinking hospital administrators who will know how to use the extra
funding. To quickly expand the hospital's capabilities, the director must be able to
manage the facility effectively, raise money, and enter public-private partnerships. He or
she should be knowledgeable about local politics and how to work within the government
bureaucracy.

Hire more healthcare professionals (doctors, nurses, and midwives). Around

200,000 nurses are more than we need in the nation. But we don't have enough money to
fill the positions for the medical staff that our hospitals need. By way of illustration, the
RN Heals project exclusively requests "volunteer nurses" to assist the government in
exchange for a payment. Legislation to boost the budget for healthcare professionals is
now being considered. In addition, we need to make sure they are safe while performing
their jobs. The two go hand in hand: upgrading hospitals and hiring the required medical
personnel.

There are numerous ways to assist the Filipino people or enhance our healthcare
system in the Philippines; all we need is good leadership and the ability to work together.
We should concentrate more on finding ways to assist individuals who cannot afford to
visit the hospital because we all understand how essential good health is to each one of
us.

I sincerely wish to provide food for everyone. Get people food as the main
priority. There is an urgent need for this right away. While local governments are
typically not experts in this area of work, there are numerous civic organizations,
religious and non-religious, that are extremely effective at it. As a result, we should think
in terms of public-private partnerships. The fastest way to get food to those in need is
with the help of the local government, whether it be through space provision, the
coordination of actions among various groups, or even public relations support to spread
the message. Since there are many cases of malnutrition in our nation and this will help
greatly, we can also prevent the emergence of many diseases.

f. Deontology Reflection

Deontology considers morality in light of how well it adheres to duties, social

standards, and motivations. From a deontological viewpoint, something is morally
permissible if you can defend your acts with an acceptable reason or a responsible
principle. According to the deontological theory, before deciding whether a course of
action is ethically right, we must first rule out all potential negative effects. This is due to
deontology's disregard for consequences, which places a greater emphasis on an
individual's motivations. This is due to Kant's contention that the only thing of moral
worth is good will. The result is unimportant and isn't even taken into account when
analyzing a problem.

Duty can be a very abstract idea. Individual acts or rules may be the subject of
duties, but a deed should not always lead to a rule. Duties can also be in opposition to one
another, such as the duty to care for your family and the duty to refrain from stealing.
Your two obligations clash if you are destitute, your family is hungry, and you are aware

14
Wesleyan University-Philippines (WUP)
Cushman Campus, Mabini Ext., Cabanatuan City Nueva Ecija

that the only way to provide for them is to steal. To get around this, you could claim that
it is not necessary to steal for your family to provide for them.

This ethic places emphasis on the idea that someone has a duty to carry out a
certain action, not out of moral obligation as in the case of virtue ethics, but rather out of
a personal duty, obligation, or duty to carry out the action. Deontological ethics assesses
whether activities are compliant with rules, regulations, and principles because people
behave in accordance with them. The morality of people's acts is thus determined by their
adherence to specific laws, regulations, and ideals. Immanuel Kant created the idea of the
categorical imperative to assess whether specific actions are morally right or wrong. In
spite of various urges that tempt individuals to act otherwise, the categorical imperative
forces people to fulfill their moral obligations.
In addition to providing healthcare workers with their well-deserved incentives,
the government should also guarantee their safety while performing their jobs. And I
believe that the modernization of hospitals and the hiring of the required medical
personnel go hand in hand in achieving a better healthcare system. And last but not the
least, our government should also implement and establish programs that encourage early
detection of disease and preventive controls. Detecting a certain disease or preventing
them before it could even harm could be a big leap for each Filipino to have good health
where they will meet their optimum health.

Health is not just merely the absence of disease as mentioned repeatedly by the
Department of Health, that being said, we should help Filipinos to have regular screening
to monitor their health. This monitoring will not only aid them in disease prevention and
treatment but will also lessen the mortality rate here in the Philippines. Therefore, with
this idea, we are hitting two birds with one stone by decreasing the mortality rate,
improving the health of the Filipino people, and most of all, improving our healthcare
system.

g. Virtue Ethics Reflection

I visualize genuine values and principles when I hear the word "virtue," and I
believe that only good individuals may possess virtue. Ethics, in my opinion, is about
good and bad, right and wrong. When the two ideas are combined, virtue ethics is the
outcome. You might be curious as to what "virtue ethics" might entail. In order to create
some fancy idea, the two terms are physically combined. A method for assisting people in
making moral decisions is virtue ethics. It merely concentrates on the people themselves
and doesn't pay much attention to religion, society, or culture. Aristotle is regarded as the
most influential thinker in the philosophy of virtue ethics.

Everyone wants to feel satisfied. Aristotle defined "pleasure" as "the action of the
mind in agreement with perfect virtue." In order to improve as people, we must
frequently carry out good deeds. These habits will eventually become second nature, and
the person will be leading a moral life. To begin with, if someone sings every day, they
15
Wesleyan University-Philippines (WUP)
Cushman Campus, Mabini Ext., Cabanatuan City Nueva Ecija

will get better at it and find it simpler to accomplish. Value-based behavior improves
one's abilities, competencies, and wellbeing. Aristotle believed that those who work hard
to pursue righteousness appear to be content in the long run and come to believe that they
deserve their success. People who frequently concentrate on their virtues start acting in
accordance with them.

Since people lack consistent character qualities, ethical theories give the
framework for comprehending moral virtues, but putting such virtues into practice
requires deeds. Knowing what behaviors produce particular moral virtues allows one to
pursue morality by consistently engaging in those behaviors.

h. Synthesis Reflection

“When does one person’s relationship result in the other person growing
personally? When does it cause the other to fail? The fact that there are proper and
improper methods to handle these familiar connections is generally obvious. We can
negotiate moral issues with the aid of ethics” -Angel Alexa Del Mundo

Ethics tells us that moral evaluation can take place at the individual, societal, and
environmental levels (both local and global). Personal can be used to refer to a person's
relationship with herself as well as her close, one-on-one relationships with other people.
It's obvious that ethical behavior has to do with how one should behave toward oneself
and toward other people.

16
Wesleyan University-Philippines (WUP)
Cushman Campus, Mabini Ext., Cabanatuan City Nueva Ecija

A moral question primarily focused on her own person is how she treats herself
well versus how she treats herself poorly (e.g., through substance abuse, suicide, etc.).
Intimate connections with other people, such as a person's parents, siblings, children,
friends, or other close acquaintances, are also referred to as personal.

When does one person's relationship result in the other person growing
personally? When does it cause the other to fail? The fact that there are proper and
improper methods to handle these familiar connections is generally obvious. We can
negotiate moral issues with the aid of ethics. The core element of utilitarianism is that a
moral course of conduct is one that increases the 'utility' of society as a whole (or
happiness). According to Natural Law, human beings have inherent values that guide
their thought and action. Deontology's core element is that an activity is moral if it
complies with specific rules or responsibilities (regardless of the results). In contrast to
consequentialist theories like utilitarianism, virtue ethics' central part is that morality
depends on developing one's character. The emphasis is on the personal virtues of the
individual, in contrast to utilitarianism (consequences) or deontology (duty). It is more
concerned with the person or agent behind the activities than the actions themselves.
