Numbers for practice 1

1. A machine produces washers whose diameter is known to be normally distributed with a

standard deviation of 0.04 mm. In order to find the mean diameter of the washers
produced, a random sample of nine washers is taken whose diameter is found to be
3.14mm.
i. Determine the 95% Confidence interval for the mean diameter of washers produced by the
machine.
ii. If a washer was taken at random and its diameter was found to be 4.00 mm, is this
difference significant at 95% confidence level?
iii. Why was it necessary to assume tat the distribution of the diameter of washers was
normal?

2. The diameters of 25 steel rods are measured and found to have a mean of 0.980 cm and a
standard deviation of 0.015 cm.
i. Determine the 99% Confidence interval for the population mean.
ii. If a similar steel rod was taken and its diameter was found to be 0.85, is this
difference significant at 99% confidence level?
3. The masses, in grammes, of 13 ball bearings taken at random from a batch are
21.4, 23.1, 25.9, 24.7, 23.4, 24.5, 25.0, 22.5, 26.9, 26.4, 25.8, 23.2 and 21.9

i. Calculate the Confidence Interval for the mean mass of the population.
ii. If a bearing was taken at random and its mass was found to be 26 gm, is this
difference significant?
iii. Why is it necessary to assume normality in this case.
