WiMax
• Acronym for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access

• Based on Wireless MAN technology

• A wireless technology optimized for the delivery of IP centric services over a wide area

• A scalable wireless platform for constructing alternative and complementary broadband networks

• A certification rectification that denotes interoperability reliability of equipment built to the IEEE

802.16 or compatible standard.

• The IEEE 802.16 Working Group develops standards that address two types of usage models

− A fixed usage model (IEEE 802.16-2004)

− A portable usage model (IEEE 802.16e)


WiMax Blocks
• WiMAX base station
• WiMAX receiver

Base Station:
▪ Maximum radius of the cell : 50 Km ; Practical limit – 10 Km
▪ MAC Layer : Common interface that makes the network interoperable and would allocate uplink
and downlink bandwidth to subscribers according to their needs in real –time basis
Receiver:
▪ Separate Antenna/ stand-alone box or PCMCIA card referred as customer premise equipment
▪ Similar to access point in a wiFi
