Title: Language make-up, Phonetics and Orthography

Objectives:
1.To know the differences between the phonetics and orthography.
2.To define the phonetics and orthography and the uses of it.
3.To determine the phonetics branches and examples.
4.Analyze the spelling of words in one’s own mother tongue.
5.Identify the rules in spelling in one’s own mother tongue.

A.Phonetics
>What is Phonetics ?
-Phonetic is a sub-field of liquistics that studies how humans make and interpret sounds.
Phonetics investigates the corresponding characteristics of sign.

Articulatory Phonetic
(Production)
>Study of the “organs of speech”.
>main focuses on sound production
Example:
You can produce words like “professors , students college and all other words using your
tounge and lips.

Acoustic Phonetic
(Transmission)
>focuses on the study of the ‘Transmissions of sounds”
>speaker ------- listener
Example:
When your Mother calls you from another room. Sound waves travels from another room to
your room.
Auditory Phonetic
(Perception)
>oldest of all types of phonetics
>Focuses on the listeners understanding and processing .
Example:
When your professor explains a topic
In class and you are able to understand it and process it after listening to them.

Why do we study Phonetics?


>To differentiate the correct pronunciation and the right meaning of the words.
>To be able to understand and understood speech of other speakers.
> To be able to fluently talk a different language producing an accurate set of words by using
the IPA symbols (International Phonetic Alphabet).

What are the importance of Phonetics?


>It is important , because it helps to improve our communication and the alphabets or words
must sound correctly.

B.Orthography
>What is Orthography ?
-Come from the Greek word means “Correct way of writing
- A method of spelling or by the use of an alphabet of other system of symbols

> Phonetics deals with sounds while Orthography all about the writing system and how they are used to
express sounds and form works.
