Identifying the Context in which a Text was Developed

Part 1

Background Information:
Do you have a cellphone, laptop, or a tablet? If yes, those gadgets are helpful to
improve your skills in reading and writing. They are tools to navigate information in different
websites. We are now living in a world where texts are accessible. They are available in just
a click of the mouse or cursor.
For you to be a better reader and writer, knowing how a text is developed would be
beneficial. It would provide a blueprint of an author’s style in writing.

What is text development?

TEXT DEVELOPMENT – This is the way of the writer to develop the text. It is the writing
strategy of the author to deliver the ideas comprehensively. This is the form of essay that
could be descriptive, expository, narrative, and argumentative (Academy Lesson, 2003).
By applying a text development in one’s work, a reader can determine the form of essay
he/she is reading.

CONTEXT IN TEXT DEVELOPMENT

Context

Context is the social, cultural, political, historical, and other related

circumstances that surround the text and form the terms from which it can be better
understood and evaluated (Tiongson & Rodriquez, 2016).

Questions in discovering a reading context (Elcomblus, 2020)

1. When was the work written?
2. What were the circumstances that produced it?
3. What issues does it deal with?
Example:
Excerpt from the short story of Mariechris David titled, Spiral Galaxy of Love
Upon browsing the website of a government, she was amazed with the homemade
papaya relish or “atsara” in Kapampangan. She immediately contacted the business
owner because she misses everything about her hometown especially the parade, she
used to watch during the Kanlahi Festival.

1
Explanation: The paragraph has statements where context is evident. The cultural aspect
was applied. The customs and traditions of Tarlac City were included such as the “atsara”
and Kanlahi Festival. On the other hand, the social aspect was also included. This context is
the inspiration of the author in developing the story.

Hypertext
Context

Hypertext is a nonlinear way of showing information. It connects topics on a screen

to related information, graphics, videos, and music. Information is not simply related to the
text. This information appears as links and is usually accessed by clicking (Landich, 2018).

FIRST CLICK

Source: Department of Health, Programs A-Z. doh.gov.ph/health-programs

While browsing the website of Department of Health (DOH), you saw the part of Health
Programs. You wanted to know the health programs of DOH that might be related to you. For
you to read the text of that article, you need to click the health program on top. Then, you will
be seeing another part.

SECOND CLICK

Source: Department of Health, Programs A-Z. doh.gov.ph/health-programs

After clicking the Adolescent Health and Development Programs, another part of the
website will be shown. Here is now the text that you will read about health programs for the
youth.

Source: Department of Health, Programs A-Z, doh.gov.ph/health-programs

2
You are now ready to read the text about the program. This is the advantage of
hypertext. It can direct you to a connected part of the website where the information that you
are looking for is found. It is really unique because of the shifting to different texts. If you want
to read more about other programs, you may click again a program found on the right side.
If you are reading a text using your cellphone, you may have noticed that some web
pages have texts that have hyperlinks (normally underlined and in blue color).

HYPERLINK

Source: Wikicommons.org, Picture of the day, Wikicommons Main Page

If you want to know more about the challenges, all you have to do is to click the
hyperlink and the other page will load. In just few seconds, hypertext allows you, as a reader,
to shift to different web pages. It is giving you the opportunity to understand the better picture
of the concept or scenario in a quick manner.
There are a lot of websites and applications which are accessible via internet. If you
do not have internet at home, you can also view websites using the DepEd commons. This
is now accessible for you, dear learners.

Hypertext in DepEd Commons

To all mobile subscribers of Globe, TM, Smart, Sun and, TNT access to the site using the
Globe/TM, Smart/Sun/TnT network will NOT incur data charges. This service of FREE access is
brought to you by DepEd and Globe/Smart in cooperation with DICT and NTC.
Important note: Links on the DepEd Commons page that require you to access the internet
outside the Commons Domain, is beyond this coverage and may incur standard data charges.
This is the upper part of DepEd commons. Let us learn more about hypertext using
this application. If you are holding a cellphone right now, follow the simple steps that will be
given.

3
You may encode your information for you to access modules in the website. To be
guided, the hypertext DepEd Common User Guide will be helpful.
By reading this part, you will have a better understanding of the part that you want to
know. It will provide a better understanding of the whole story. Bear in mind that true
comprehension is your ability to understand the whole picture.

GASPING FOR TRUTH

By Benjamin Gaspar

#1 Why is death inevitable?

“Time of death, 4:15pm….”

She is my favorite person because she never left me since my parents died
in 2009. I was only 16 then when my mother and father went to Camiling to fetch
my brother and for a very unpredictable reason, well at the level of my innocent mind
before, they died because of an accident. My relatives told me that they were killed
by ghosts or other elements found in our barrio.
