A. France Background
France in an independent nation in Western Europa and a great seat of
government. France is a semi-presidential Republic, adopting the values of
“Liberty, Equality, Fraternity.” France is one of the most influential countries in
the European Union, it is proven that France is always involved in almost all
sectors along with other members in formulating policies in the European
Union.
France is also not only part of the European ‘regional’ economic and
political structure, but has also been integrated into the ‘global’ system.
France economic growth
France is one of the largest and strongest economic in the world. The economic
system adopted by France is the same as the United States and Britain, namely
the liberal (market) economic system.

According to data from the IMF, the French economy was ranked 8 in
the world based on the ability to spend (PPP) in 2001, which amounted to $
2.047 trillion. Meanwhile, based on CIA World Factbook (2008) data, France’s

GDP is $ 2,067 trillion, which ranks 8 in the world based on PPP. Then in the
G8 Developed countries group, France in the fifth largest economy, and sixth in
terms of nominal GDP.

SECTOR OF THE FRENCH ECONOMY


1. Agriculture
Agricultural crops in France are widely grown in the north and northeast. In
this area the soil is very fertile and very suitable for planting beets (sugarcane)
and wheat. In the southern part is widely planted with grapes (2nd largest
producer in the world). Other agricultural products are wheat, sugar beet, rice,
and fruit potatoes, barley, apples, and vegetables
2. Ranch
The types of livestock that are kept are cattle, sheep, and pigs. The livestock
products are milk (the 3rd largest producer in the world), meat, cheese and
butter.
3. Fishing
The types of fish produced include herring, cod, tuna, and shellfish. Fishing is
concentrated in the coastal port of Armorica. Fish canneries are located in the
cities of Boulogne and Lorient.
4. Mining
The types of mines found in France include the following: Coal, found in
Artois, Nord, and Lorraine.
• Petroleum, found in the Landes.
Natural gas is found in the Pyrenees
• Iron and phosphate ores, found in Lorraine.
Bauxite, found in Brignoles, Provence, and Largen Tiere.
• Potas, found in southern Alsace.
Salt, found in Midi, Vendee, and Lorraine.

The types that are cultivated and developed include the following:
• Fish preservation and canning industries are located in Boulogne and
Lorient.
• The world's first giant electric power industry/project that uses tidal
currents, is located at the mouth of the Rance river in the bay of Saint-
Malo (Bretagne).The largest car industry is at Renault.
6. Trade
The main exports of France are cars, locomotives, cargo ships, chemicals,
textiles, clothing, weapons, and wine.
• French imports are coal, cotton, petroleum, industrial raw materials, and
means of transportation.
• Its main trading partners are the European Economic Community (EEC)
and the United States.
Areas of Industry in France
• In the area around the Lorraine iron deposit there is an iron an steel
industry
• In the city of France and its surrounding there metal and textile industry
• In the area of the Rhone and the saone valleys near France thear is car,
motorcycle , and bycle industry
• Paris and Toulouse have an airplane industry
• Lotharingen and Lorraine became the location of the iron and coal
industry
