Unit 5 Assessment
1. The owners of the pet sitting business have set aside to purchase chewy toys for dogs, ,
and collars for the cats, . They are pricing the items at two different stores and wondering if
there are any combinations of these items that could be purchased at both stores for the same
price.

Marco’s Market: The price of a chewy toy for dogs is while the price of a cat collar is .

Sonia’s Superstore: The price of a chewy toy for dogs is and the price of a cat collar is .

Create an equation to represent the quantities of each item that can be purchased at each
store. Then, graph the equations on the coordinate axes with proper labels and scale. Use the
graph to find the combination of chewy toys for dogs and cat collars for cats that adds up to
the same amount or price at both stores.

2. Graph all of the solutions to the inequality

7. Paul and Art are going to start a business selling fresh vegetables in their neighborhood. They
want to grow two kinds of vegetables: cucumbers and carrots. They are making a list of some
of the constraints they need to consider as part of their business.

• Weeding and watering time: The cucumbers require minutes of weeding and
watering time, while the carrots require minutes of weeding and watering. Paul and Art
have up to hours each day that can be used for weeding and watering both the
cucumbers and the carrots.
• Start-up costs: Paul and Art are able to spend up to on carrot seed and cucumber
starts. (Starts are small cucumber plants.) The cost for the cucumber plants is per plant
while the cost for the carrot seeds is per package.

a. Write a system of inequalities for the two constraints that Paul and Art have. Be sure to
define your variables.

8. Jordan and Payton are friends with the owners of a pet sitting business and are thinking that
starting a business to make money in the summer is a good idea. They are thinking that they
will sell emergency items.

Start-up costs: Jordan and Payton can spend up to that they have saved to start their
business. They are planning to sell flashlights and emergency blankets. They have a supplier
that they can purchase these items from. Their cost will be per blanket and per
flashlight.

Income Requirements: Jordan and Payton are planning to sell the blankets for each and sell
the flashlights for each. Their parents have told them that if they are not able to make
more than , then they need to do something else, so they have made it a goal to make
more than .

Determine whether or not this will be a good business venture. To investigate this business
venture, do the following:

• Create an inequality to represent each constraint.

• Graph the system of inequalities.
• Determine if there are any combinations of items that can satisfy both start-up costs and
income.
• Make a recommendation to Jordan and Payton supported by your findings.

9. Explain how you can know whether a system of linear equations will have one solution, no
solutions, or infinitely many solutions. Use representations, such as graphs and equations, to

illustrate your explanations and highlight how recognition of these various solution
possibilities can be identified.

10. Solve the following system of equations using three different methods. One of them MUST be
using Matrix Row Reduction, and the other two can be of your choosing. A student has
suggested that this system of equations connects with the Pet Sitting business. Is the solution
viable within the context of cats and dogs?
