3. Introduction
OAV ACARS is a client that connects to Flight Simulator via FSUIPC, records the data of the
flight and sends them to the Dispatch Office of Olympic Air & Aegean Virtual. It was created to
replace FS Passengers and provide a convenient way to submit PIREP (Pilot REPorts). It is
working exclusively with the Dispatch Office of Olympic Air & Aegean Virtual and is provided to
its members free of charge. It is working outside the framework of FS and does not interfere
with the simulation, as it retrieves data via FSUIPC.

OAV ACARS is the result of 2 years of development. We would like to thank al those who
contributed to the beta testing, pinpointing problems and suggesting improvements.

OAV ACARS will continue to develop for the current and future needs of the members of
Olympic Air & Aegean Virtual.

5. System requirements
For the application to function properly the following software is required, publicly available
and free of charge:
 Windows Installer 4.5
 Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.2 (x86 and x64)
 Microsoft Visual Basic PowerPacks 10.0
 FSUIPC (freeware or payware version) for FS9/FSX/P3D or XPUIPC for XPlane
 Adobe Acrobat Reader
 Microsoft Internet Explorer 11 or later

The installation routine of OAV ACARS checks if the above mentioned prerequisites are installed
in your system and afterwards downloads and installs any missing ones. FSUIPC has to be
downloaded from here and installed manually.

To be able to take advantage of all the aspects of OAV ACARS the following are recommended
but not required:
 WideFS (if you wish to run OAV ACARS from a client PC through your network)
 Logitech Arx (to control OAV ACARS with a mobile device and utilize the electronic
checklists)

6. Downloading and installing

OAV ACARS can be downloaded from the Dispatch Office of Olympic Air & Aegean Virtual. Login
with your credentials and navigate to ACARS  Download to get it. OAV ACARS is only available
through our website to avoid the receipt of any malware, spyware, etc.

Since the application is not commonly used and its reputation is low some protection software
– like antivirus – might conceive it as a threat. Ignore any warning and if necessary add an
exception for this application.

The installation routine will check the environment of your PC for missing prerequisites which
it will download and install. You might have to accept some 3rd party terms of use. In case you
are asked to reboot your system after all installations, it is recommended to do so.

When OAV ACARS is started, it checks for the availability of newer versions and gets updated
automatically.

In order for ACARS to communicate with the simulator you use, one of the following must be
installed:
 FSUIPC 7 if you use MSFS
 FSUIPC 6 if you use Prepa3d v5

10. Point system & Flight reporting

OAV ACARS is monitoring the performance of the pilot during a flight through various
parameters. After the completion of a flight and the submission of the PIREP the pilot points
can be found in the Flight Report located in the Documents\OAV ACARS Reports folder, as well
as in the Dispatch Office of Olympic Air & Aegean Virtual by selecting Flight Details in the report
of the flight in question. The total pilot points are visible in the Roster of each subsidiary he/she
flies for.

The sum of the points may be positive or negative and the monitored parameters can be found
at Table 9.2: Monitoring parameters of flight. It is noted that the parameters in Olympic
Aeroclub differ in terms of points from landing v/s as displayed at Table 9.3: Landing rate points
in Olympic Aeroclub.

OAV ACARS has the ability, although it’s not been directly supplied by the simulators, to
identify the loaded number of passengers and cargo weight of various aircraft addons and to
generate a PIREP that corresponds directly to the flight parameters. Simulations supported
are FSX and P3D and the supported aircraft addons are displayed in Table 9.1: Supported
aircraft addons. For the rest of the aircraft an algorithm is used to assign the payload to
passengers and cargo based on their characteristics.

By selecting your flight in the Dispatch Office through Flights  My Flights and after clicking
on Flight Details you may view all the details of your flight including a map that draws your
flight plan route with a blue line and your flown route with red color.

In the same page there is a link to download in Google Earth format (.kml) the information on
the map. Through Google Earth you can view the lateral & vertical profile of your flight.

11. Gate detection

OAV ACARS has the ability to recognize the gate/parking in which the aircraft is stationed to
both departing and arrival airports. All simulations are supported apart from X-Plane.

For the gate/parking recognition to work, a database which is not been supplied by the
simulator must exist and is created with the help of a software called MakeRwys. This utility
is created by Pete Dowson, the creator of the famous FSUIPC. It read the installed sceneries
and creates the databased which is often used by various 3rd party developers.

To create the database, you have to download MakeRwys from http://www.fsuipc.com, extract
it’s contents to the main simulator folder and run the program as administrator. Especially for
Prepar3D, you have to place in the same folder the file called LorbySceneryExport.exe to be
able to read the sceneries installed with P3D’s new method. You should also assign
administrator right to LorbySceneryExport.exe.

Detailed instructions are available in MakeRwys readme pdf.

It’s obvious that following the installation of a new scenery and if you want OAV ACARS
gate/parking recognition feature to work, you’ll have to re-create the database again by
running MakeRwys.exe.

12. Logitech Arx

Logitech Arx is a mobile application for Android and IOS phones that allows the control and
monitoring of the ACARS via a mobile device (phone, tablet, etc). Additionally it provides for
the option of electronic checklists specific to the aircraft type used.

In order to install the application:

 Download and install to the computer running the simulator Logitech Gaming Software
(LGS) from here (it is irrelevant whether you have a Logitech device connected to your
computer).
 Install the application Arx Control to your mobile device.
 Start LGS in your computer.
 Launch Arx Control in your mobile device. It will search your local network for
computers running LGS and ask to connect.
 After you authorize the connection the devices are paired and you do not need to
repeat this procedure.

In order to use the application:

 Provided that LGS runs in your computer, launch the application Arx Control.
 From ACARS click on the icon Logitech Arx and select Arx Connect.

13. Updates
OAV ACARS is checking for new version every time it is started. Once a new version is detected
you are given the option to obtain it. The process is automatic and can be – although it is not
recommended – skipped. The application is continuously improved.

14. Known issues and support

You can find below a list of known issues that might appear during installation or usage of OAV
ACARS, as well as the recommended actions to solve them:
 After downloading the installation file of OAV ACARS, your browser flags it as
dangerous. Just select from the relevant options that it is safe and continue with the
installation.
 After downloading the installation file of OAV ACARS, your antivirus flags it as
dangerous. Select from the relevant options that the installation file is safe or turn off
your antivirus during download and installation of OAV ACARS.
 How to make sure that everything is working? Without running FS, book a flight in the
Dispatch Office, connect through OAV ACARS and select this flight. OAV ACARS will
start parsing the flight plan and a window will pop up asking for the estimated trip time
(Block Time).
 ACARS fails to connect to Microsoft Flight Simulator (MSFS). In case you are running
FSUIPC 7 with administrator rights, you should also run ACARS with the same
administrator rights.
 ACARS does not recognize my helicopter. In order for a helicopter to be recognized as
such by OAV ACARS it has to be declared correctly. To verify that, open aircraft.cfg
and make sure that the field [GeneralEngineData] is populated as follows:
engine_type = 3 //0=Piston, 1=Jet, 2=None, 3=Helo-Turbine, 4=Rocket,
5=Turboprop
 After ending the flight I select View Submitted Report and get an error message. This
happens because of the security settings of Adobe Acrobat Reader. To be able to view
the reports via ACARS:
o From Acrobat Reader select Edit  Preferences
o Select Security (Enhanced) on the left pane
o Uncheck the Enable Protected Mode at startup box
o Select Yes to the prompt about being sure about making this change
o Click OK
 After ending the flight, the pdf report is not generated. Your antivirus is blocking the
pdf file creation. Disable your antivirus or add OAV ACARS as an exception.

If you face any other problem during installation or usage of OAV ACARS you may seek
assistance through the forum of Olympic Air & Aegean Virtual in the category OAV ACARS
support. Please provide the following information:
 Operating system (e.g. Windows 7 SP1 64bit).
 .NET Framework version (you can check it by going to Control Panel  Programs.
 Description of the problem and conditions under which it occured.
 The error message (if present).
