“SAMAON SULAIMAN”

Samaon Sulaiman is a Filipino musician who is known for his unique blend of hip-hop and
traditional sounds. Born and raised in Davao City, Philippines, Samaon grew up in a family of musicians.
His father was a percussionist in a local band, while his mother was a singer. At a young age, Samaon
was already exposed to different genres of music, from traditional Filipino folk songs to American rap
and hip-hop. He would often spend hours listening to his parents’ vinyl collection, soaking up the sounds
and rhythms from different artists. Samaon’s love for music only grew stronger as he entered his teenage
years. He started writing his own rap lyrics and composing beats on his computer. He found inspiration in
the works of Filipino rap icons like Francis M., Gloc-9, and Andrew E. and American hip-hop legends
like Tupac, Biggie, and Nas.In 2009, Samaon formed his own rap group called “Kolateral”.

The group gained a small but loyal following in the local hip-hop scene, with its members
performing in various bars and events around Davao City. Samaon’s contributions to the group’s music
were his soulful lyrics and rap flow, which often dealt with social commentary and personal struggles. In
2013, Samaon decided to step out of his comfort zone and explore his roots in traditional Filipino music.
He joined a local band called “Hagbayon”, which specialized in playing indigenous instruments such as
the kulintang, agong, and kalutang. With Hagbayon, he learned to play these instruments himself and
incorporated them into his rap music. It was through this collaboration that Samaon discovered a new
sound that he would later call “indie-rap”. Indie-rap combines elements of Filipino folk music and hip-
hop, resulting in a fresh and unique kind of music that is both nostalgic and innovative. In 2016, Samaon
released his debut solo album entitled “Sulaiman”. The album featured a mix of tracks that showcased his
indie-rap style, as well as his skills as a storyteller. The song “Sige Lang” became an instant hit, with its
catchy chorus and relatable verses about chasing dreams and overcoming obstacles.Since then, Samaon
has released several other albums and collaborated with different artists in and outside of the Philippines.
