Definition of Intellectual Property Rights

Intellectual property rights (IPR) have been defined as ideas, inventions, and creative expressions
based on which there is a public willingness to bestow the status of property.
Intellectual property (IP) pertains to any original creation of the human intellect such as artistic,
literary, technical, or scientific creation. Intellectual property rights (IPR) refers to the legal
rights given to the inventor or creator to protect his invention or creation for a certain period of
time.
Intellectual property law deals with the rules for securing and enforcing legal rights to
inventions, designs, and artistic works. Just as the law protects ownership of personal property
and real estate, so too does it protect the exclusive control of intangible assets. The purpose of
these laws is to give an incentive for people to develop creative works that benefit society, by
ensuring they can profit from their works without fear of misappropriation by others.
Intellectual property law deals with the rules for securing and enforcing legal rights to
inventions, designs, and artistic works.
There are many types of intellectual property, and some countries recognize more than others.
The most well-known types are copyrights, patents, trademarks, and trade secrets.
Copyright Definition
Copyright refers to the legal right of the owner of intellectual property. In simpler terms,
copyright is the right to copy.
Under copyright law, a work is considered original if the author created it from independent
thinking void of duplication. This type of work is known as an Original Work of Authorship
(OWA). Anyone with an original work of authorship automatically has the copyright to that
work, preventing anyone else from using or replicating it

Plagiarism Definition
Plagiarism is presenting work or ideas from another source as your own, with or without consent
of the original author, by incorporating it into your work without full acknowledgement.

Main Types of Plagiarism

Direct Plagiarism
Direct plagiarism is the word-for-word transcription of a section of someone else’s work, without
attribution and without quotation marks.
Self- Plagiarism
Self-plagiarism occurs when a student submits his or her own previous work, or mixes parts of
previous works, without permission from all professors involved.
Mosaic Plagiarism
Mosaic Plagiarism occurs when a student borrows phrases from a source without using quotation
marks, or finds synonyms for the author’s language while keeping to the same general structure
and meaning of the original.
Accidental Plagiarism
Accidental plagiarism occurs when a person neglects to cite their sources, or misquotes their
sources, or unintentionally paraphrases a source by using similar words, groups of words, and/or
sentence structure without attribution.
