Exam Guide
You will be expected to know their definitions and apply the terms to The Wizard of Oz.
In Question 2, you will be given a comprehension passage from the book, and asked a few
questions. (15 marks).
The comprehension questions will mainly test your understanding, but may include some
questions about vocabulary and grammar. The main grammar point that we have covered is the
Noun Phrase (which is a noun with its related adjectives). For practice, you may search for a few
noun phrases in the book and make a list. Also, you can search the dictionary for the meaning of
difficult words, as you may be asked to write the meanings, or make sentences.
In Question 3, you will describe the Land of Oz (as much as you can) and the people who live
there (as much as you know about them). Then, you will compare it to Dorothy’s original home
and family in Kansas. Which place does Dorothy prefer, and why? (12 marks).
Remember that in description, nouns are helpful when you want to tell about objects that are
present in any particular area, whereas adjectives come in handy when you want to describe
the physical aspects/features of the area, including color, size, shape etc. Adjective can also be
used to describe people (their clothes, how tall or short they are) and their inner qualities (kind,
wicked, foolish, jolly, soft-hearted etc.)
So for instance, when you are describing the Land of Oz, some nouns you may use are: brook
(stream), meadows, greenery, trees, birds etc. Some adjectives could be blue, beautiful, lush
green, sweet (singing of birds). The Munchkins may be described as short, wearing blue clothes.
They are friendly, hospitable, generous, kind-hearted, grateful etc etc. On the other hand,
Dorothy’s home and family in Kansas are grey, dull…you know the rest…
In this question, you can stick to the first four chapters, but if anyone has read more chapters or
the whole book and decides to write more, he will earn bonus points.
Question 4 is about using your imagination…Imagine that you are suddenly whisked away from
your beloved home and taken to a strange country. What things about your home and family
would you miss the most? You can answer this question in the shape of a letter to the president
of your new country, describing to him all about your previous home, how much you miss it,
and asking his help in sending you back. (10 marks)
Your letter can begin something like this:
