In the 1960s, American scientists worked with the government to send men to the moon. One of the programs they designed was called the “Apollo program.” Its goal was to land two astronauts on the moon and bring them back safely. Apollo 11 achieved this goal in 1969, so more missions were planned. Apollo 13 was sentupin 1970. Two days into the mission, the crew heard a loud bang. They were 250,000 miles from Earth and the power on the spacecraft went out. Astronaut John Swigert called to the control room with the now famous, “Houston, we've had a problem.” The crew lost electrical power and there was grave concern about whether the spacecraft could safely make it back to Earth's atmosphere without burning up and costing the lives of the three astronauts inside.
