Read and study the case below carefully. Use your prior knowledge and any information you have had from the
previous reading to state your argument toward this case.

Ryan is a polyglot. He was born in Indonesia and had his childhood there, so of course he knows Bahasa
Indonesia well. He spent his teenager’s time in Canada because his father had to move for work. In Canada, he
spoke English and French at school, and Bahasa Indonesia and Javanese (sometimes) at home. Long story short,
after graduating from university, he decided to go back to Indonesia. He works for International company where
he is sometimes asked to translate some documents from French to Bahasa Indonesia, English to Bahasa
Indonesia, and vice versa. He actually doesn’t have related certificates for translation.

State your argument related to the following questions:

1. Is Ryan translator?
No, he is not.
2. If Ryan is a polyglot, is he able to be a translator? Why? Or Why not? (state any theory you have read to
support your argument)
In this case, Ryan is able to be a translator because he can speak many languages (English, French, and
also Indonesia). But he is not a translator because he doesn’t have the official certificate to be a
translator.
You can visit link: polyglots and translators aren’t really on the same team. Each practice, in its purest
form, takes opposing stances toward the sufficiency of translation. Yes, the polyglot’s relentless
accumulation of languages is rooted in the same historical and cultural conditions that helped to shape
translation traditions. And yes, translation traditions are oriented in various ways toward meaning-
making and meaning-preserving. This isn’t to say that one practice is better than another. Rather, it’s
interesting that affinities run so deeply despite these differences. You can visit the link:

3. What does Ryan need to be a translator?

What Ryan needs is an official certificate of translator. It will be easier to get the certificate because
Ryan is polyglot, and he can speak some languages such as French, English, and Indonesia.
