CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
INTRODUCTION

Mental health, although not a new concern to educators has become increasingly acceptable to
discuss in recent years. Mental health problems can affect a student's concentration, and academic
performance. Senior Highschool Students stated that mental health difficulties interfere with their
studies. Philippines is now coming up a solution after successfully flattening the curve of the
pandemic with measures such as social distancing, quarantine, and closure of public places including
schools. Mental health issues can start in the early childhood, and many students spoke about having
of depression or self-harming that they carried to school.

Mental Health is a positive concept. It encompasses our emotions, our psyche, and our social
interactions. Having good mental health is more than the absence of illness. Rather, it’s a state of
holistic well-being. When we are mentally healthy, we can realize our abilities, cope with stress,
work productively and contribute to society. "My depression and anxiety started some time before I
came to school, but leaving home, being in an extremely taxing social environment and being under
large academic pressure all took their toll on me," said one student.

However, the challenges related to the students’ mental health continue beyond this phase of
the New Normal. According to the survey made up by World Health Organization (WHO), 16% of
Filipino students at the age of 13 to 17 have attempted suicide at least once within a year.

Since the pandemic started, children have conquered multiple threats to their mental health
and the cause of Senior Highschool Students dropping out from school due to some changes. Finally,
the researchers aim to identify the effects of the new educational set-up by assessing the relationship
between senior high school students' mental health and on their academics amidst the new education
set-up in the Philippines. This study will also conclude the strategies to support students’ mental
health during these days of the new normal.

GRADE 12 STUDENTS”

Mental health awareness is an important issue all over the country. Health professionals also
approved the impact of the student's mental health on educational achievements. Students struggling
with depression, anxiety or other mental illnesses have experience difficulty in learning,
concentrating, taking exams, or doing performance tasks. Mental health stability is important and the
awareness of the parents because most students undergo a lot of pressure from their parents and other
people surrounding them.

As a researcher and a student who undergo a lot of pressure there are times and unexpected
that we encounter breakdowns mostly at night. Due to this situation, students can’t concentrate
properly in studying the lessons.

The New Educational Set-up can and possibly affect the students Mental Health, due to the
virus that is spreading around the Philippines. Due to the complex nature of healthcare professionals’
roles and responsibilities, the education of this workforce is multifaceted and challenging. The
changed format is likely to impact learning pedagogy effecting both students and teachers.  Students
are in the middle of sinking in the New Normal Educational Set-up due to 2 years of lockdown and
blended learning, most of the students can’t process the face-to-face classes and some student can’t
cope up with the topics because some students rely on Google, Brainly, Quilbot, etc.

Possible health consequences of online learning among students can include increased
anxiety and absenteeism. These can stem from the increased demand for new technological skills,
productivity, and information overload. The COVID-19 pandemic worsened these consequences
when educational institutions shifted from face-to-face activities to mostly online learning modalities
to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

The phrase "new normal," nor New Educational Set-up which describes online and distant
learning, is now a popular term. Yet what does "new normal" actually mean? Although the phrase
has no definite meaning that numerous people considered it to be a more technologically focused
teaching method and education in a post-COVID environment. The expectation is that education in
the pre-pandemic era's "new normal" will never be a replica of it.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

This study was anchored on two theories: Psychosocial Theory – Erikson and Tria J. Z.
(2020). The COVID-19 Pandemic through the Lens of Education in the Philippines: New Normal.
Education: his theories of the unconscious, as Freud emphasized that the Ericsson believe in this age.
Mental Health related an issue associated with I that describes the variations of the “I” is defined. He
believes that there are certain traits and psychological health of person who lacks these elements
distinguishes. He stated that based on the personal lives and in the community with mental health
manner that is free from conflicts of remarkable talent and ability to use.

Tria J. Z. (2020) she stated that the education sector is one of the highly affected by the
COVID-19 pandemic. In the Philippines, where there are still a growing COVID-19 infections as of
now, this study presented some of the new normal situation in the school setting. However, there were
some posed challenges and issues presented while recommending several approaches on the new
normal. Schools at all levels, therefore, need to address these concerns and carefully evaluate plans
and procedures on the implementation of the new normal. Collaboration is the most important at these
difficult times.

CHAPTER II
REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE

Gina M., Julian B., Dominic C., Katy S., and Naomi M. (2021-2022) stated that using a
mixed-methods sequential explanatory approach, they examined the relationships between academic
success during COVID-19 and the mental health, connectivity, and participation of distant education
students. Multiple regression, mediation, and content analysis were used to evaluate the online survey
responses of 208 distance education students (ages 18 to 84, 144 females, 60 men, three nonbinary
people, and 163 of whom self-identified as White British). Links between mental health (well-being
and anxiety) and academic performance were mediated by connectedness (loneliness and a sense of
belonging to university). Poorer wellbeing was linked to less emotional closeness, greater loneliness,
and worse self-reported academic achievement, according to a subsample study of students who
reached clinical concern levels for anxiety and wellbeing (n 14 123). Anxiety was linked to decreased
emotional closeness and increased relationship intensity with one person, as well as lower self-
reported academic achievement. These routes were triangulated and placed within the context of the
connectivity that the students had experienced. To demonstrate causal relationships, future research
utilizing a longitudinal approach is required.

Liza G. Et al., concluded that students’ mental health has been severely impacted by the
COVID-19 epidemic. This research assessed the mental health of high school students at Bantayan
National High School in Cebu, Philippines, during the transition to the new curriculum and the
COVID-19 epidemic. 2,759 randomly selected high school students were given survey questionnaires
as part of a descriptive correlation design. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to process
the acquired data. The majority of high school pupils, who are mostly female and of the right high
school age, are classified as coming from low-income and poor households on the basis of their
combined monthly income, according to the results. Additionally, the results showed that although
occasionally apprehensive and pressured, students typically had good mental health.

DIGVIJAY PANDEY Et al., found out the global health situation is arguably the worst it has
ever been in the twenty-first century. Every country has been brought to its knees by the corona virus
illness (COVID-19) pandemic, which has shut down a number of sectors and industries, including the
educational system. Given that social distance is now considered the “new normal” by the majority of
governments globally, teachers, students, and other education stakeholders are unsure about what will
happen to the education industry. In order to promote learning and guarantee that students continue
their academic endeavors despite numerous social constraints, educational institutions are building an
online curriculum.

Zahra Alsairafi Et al., stated that according to the Student Experience in the Research
University (SERU) Consortium survey of 30,725 undergraduate students and 15,346 graduate and
professional students conducted in May–July 2020 at nine public research universities, the COVID-19
pandemic has looming negative effects on the mental health of undergraduate and graduate students at
research universities. According to the PHQ-2 and GAD-2 screening instruments, 35% of
undergraduates, 32% of graduate and professional students, and 39% of undergraduate, graduate, and
professional students tested positively for major depressive disorder and 39% for generalized anxiety
disorder, respectively. Students who are low-income, students of color, women, non-binary students,
transgender students, gay or lesbian, bisexual, queer, questioning, asexual, and pansexual students, as
well as students who are caregivers, have higher rates of major depressive disorder and generalized
anxiety disorder. Major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder are more common
among undergraduate and graduate students who struggled to adjust to distance learning. In addition,
compared to prior years, the pandemic has increased the prevalence of mental health issues in
students. In fact, major depressive illness is two times more common among graduate and
professional students in 2020 than it was in 2019, and generalized anxiety disorder is 1.5 times as
common.

Aziz Essadek, Thomas Rabeyron stated that in this study, 8004 French students from the East
of France—the country’s earliest and hardest-hit region—have their mental health’s effects on the
Covid-19 pandemic’s effects assessed. According to our understanding, this is the largest study ever
done on the pandemic’s effects on students’ mental health. Our findings demonstrate the extreme

“THE EFFECT OF NEW EDUCATIONAL SET-UP ON THE MENTAL HEALTH OF THE

CLAVERIA SCHOOL OF ARTS AND TRADES SENIOR HIGHSCHOOL

levels of anxiety, sadness, and suffering that students experience. Given the high distress levels and
THE

possibility that the pandemic and imprisonment have fostered the onset of post-traumatic stress
symptoms, a sizeable number of kids may need psychiatric care.

Langgeng Budianto stated that in their study, healthcare professionals (HCPs) and
undergraduate students at the health sciences center were evaluated for how the COVID-19 pandemic
affected their mental health (HSCUs). Additionally, it looked at the causes of the study population’s
higher than average rates of mental health burden. The Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and the
Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item (GAD-7) were issued concurrently to HCPs and HSCUs in
Kuwait for the purpose of conducting a cross-sectional research. Depression (PHQ-9) and anxiety are
established diagnostic tools for evaluating mental health state (GAD-7). SPSS version 25 was used for
the statistical analysis. Results: A total of 857 people, including 298 HSCUs and 559 HCPs, took part
in this study. The percentage of respondents who reported having moderately severe depression or
severe depression (PHQ-9 total score of less than 15) was 66.6%. When compared to HCPs (17 8),
the median (interquartile range, IQR) PHQ-9 score for HSCUs was substantially higher (20 11.5).
36.7% of respondents reported having severe anxiety (GAD-7 total score 15). The median (IQR)
GAD-7 scores among HCPs (14 7) and HSCUs (13 8) did not differ significantly. Three
characteristics were substantially and independently related with severe depression in HCPs,
according to a binary logistic regression analysis. When compared to men, women were shown to
have a higher prevalence of severe depression. Additionally, it was much lower among those under
the age of 50 and in people who said they had no direct interaction with COVID-19 patients. In
HSCUs, women displayed more depression than men did. As opposed to their counterparts in the 18-
29 age group who had a history of chronic disease, those above the age of 29 who had no history of
chronic disease had lower levels of depression. Conclusions: The COVID-19 pandemic significantly
harmed Kuwaiti HCPs’ and HSCUs’ mental health. The necessity of proactive measures to promote
their mental health and wellbeing through educational campaigns and psychological support programs
is brought out by this.

Kristy N. Ando Et al., concluded that igher education has relied on blended learning as a
method to maintain a high standard of instruction despite the epidemic. The life experiences of
students at Cebu Technological University-Moalboal Campus were therefore analyzed and examined
in this study. The three historical perspectives—the theories of autonomy and independence, theory of

industrialization, and theory of interaction and communication—reflect the theory of remote

education or distance learning. Based on Moustakas’ Modified Van Kaam Approach, the data were
analyzed by 11 participants using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). There were four
main topics that emerged, including (Theme 1) difficulties with blended learning, (Theme 2) students’
learning preferences, (Theme 3) the importance of motivation, and (Theme 4) the comfort of online
websites. These four central themes indicate that those pupils are having difficulty with a blended
learning approach. These real-world experiences of college students could suggest a course of action
for the institution as it looks at pedagogical approaches to solve the students’ learning challenges.

Aziz Essadek, Thomas Rabeyron stated that in this study, 8004 French students from the
