AGREEMENT
11. The verb must agree only with the subject
Singular subject and singular verb
Ex. My uncle has bushy brows
She eats a lot of Belgian chocolate.
Plural subject and plural verb

Ex. They run down the road.


The children have very loving parents

The verb does not agree with noun next to it


Ex. Each of the boys flies a kite.
Many of the girls were stung by bees.
Often there are words between the subjects and the verb. These words do
not affect the verb. Concentrate on the subjects, to see if it is singular or
plural and use a singular or plural verb to agree with it.
Ex.
Incorrect - the bouquet of flowers are a
birthday present.
Correct - the bouquet of flowers is a birthday present
Other examples:
Thirty-five cents was lost through the hole on the purse

rules above.

Ex: Running with ducks is my favorite sport


Running to the store and flying through
the air are my favorite sports

Ex: The girls who eat cake are happy

singular or plural verb to accord with its
antecedent i.e. if the subject is singular use
a singular, use a singular verb and if the
subject is plural, we use a plural verb.
When phrase comes between the subjects and the verb, remember
that the verb still agrees with the subject, Not the noun or pronoun
in the phrase following the subject of the sentence.

Ex: The students, as well as the faculty members, is excited.
