SEMESTER 2 SESSION 2022/2023

ASSIGNMENT

Question 1 [4 Marks]
One hundred students were surveyed and asked if they are currently taking Mathematics (M),
English (E) or Computer Science (C). The survey findings are summarized below:

𝑛(𝐶) = 45 𝑛(𝐸) = 41 𝑛(𝑀) = 40

𝑛(𝐶 ∩ 𝐸) = 15 𝑛(𝐶 ∩ 𝑀) = 18 𝑛(𝐶 ∩ 𝐸 ∩ 𝑀) = 7
𝑛[(𝐶 ∩ 𝐸) ∪ (𝐶 ∩ 𝑀) ∪ (𝐶 ∩ 𝐸 ∩ 𝑀)] = 36

a) Use a Venn diagram to represent this data. [2 Marks]

b) How many students are only taking Mathematics? [2 Marks]

Question 2 [8 Marks]
Let 𝑃(𝑥) be the statement “𝑥 spends more than five hours every weekday in class”, where the
domain of 𝑥 consists of all students. Express each of these quantifications in English.

a) ∃𝑥𝑃(𝑥) [2 Marks]
b) ∀𝑥𝑃(𝑥) [2 Marks]
c) ∃𝑥¬𝑃(𝑥) [2 Marks]
d) ∀𝑥¬𝑃(𝑥) [2 Marks]

Question 3 [4 Marks]
An arithmetic progression has first term log 2 27 and common difference log 2 𝑥.

a) Show that the fourth term can be written as log 2 (27𝑥 3 ). [2 Marks]
b) Given that the fourth term is 6, find the exact value of 𝑥. [2 Marks]

Question 4 [4 Marks]
In the year 2013, a shop sold 150 computers. Each year the shop sold 10 more computers than
the year before, so that the shop sold 160 computers in 2014, 170 computers in 2015, and so on
forming an arithmetic sequence.

a) Show that the shop sold 220 computers in 2020. [2 Marks]

b) Calculate the total number of computers the shop sold from 2013 to 2023 inclusive. [2 Marks]

Question 5 [20 Marks]

Prove the following statements by mathematical induction.

1
a) ∑𝑛𝑟=1 𝑟(𝑟 + 1) = 3 𝑛(𝑛 + 1)(𝑛 + 2) is true for all 𝑛 ≥ 1. [7 Marks]

b) (𝑎𝑏)𝑛 = 𝑎𝑛 𝑏 𝑛 is true for all 𝑛 ∈ 𝑁. [7 Marks]

c) 𝑛(𝑛 + 1) is even for all 𝑛 ∈ 𝑍 + . [6 Marks]
