4 Categories of External Influences to Career Choice

1. Family Expectations and Needs

 Parents can influence the development of his/her values, interest, and
skills.
 The family can also be a support of financial, emotional, and social
support that may help an individual choose his/her career.
 However, there may be times that family can hinder or restrict one’s
career choice.
2. Life Circumstances
 Situations, events, and conditions can either provide either an advantage
or disadvantage when it comes to one’s career path.

3. Spiritual and Religious Factors

 Certain spiritual or religious orientation may be incorporated in a person’s
career planning.
4. Social Service and Motivation
  Social service motivation refers to the use of one’s work or career in
helping to make the world a better place.

External influences are not fully separate from the internal influences exerted on an individual
because external factors can also shape one’s personal interests, values, and skills. Hence,
when it comes to choosing a career, a balance between one’s internal and external influences is
necessary.

PRACTICAL GUIDELINES IN CAREER PLANNING

1. Set Personal Goals

 Goal setting is important when you think about your future and in motivating
yourself to turn your vision into reality.

2. Set Smaller Goals
 Once you have set the plan for your goals in life, set a five-year plan of the smaller
goals that you need to complete to achieve your career plan. Then create a one
year plan, a six month plan, and a one month plan of a progressively smaller goals
that you should reach to achieve your lifetime goals. Then, create a weekly or daily
to-do list.

3. Stay on Course
 Once you have decided on the first set of goals, continue the process by
reviewing and updating your to-do list on a daily or weekly basis. You can also
schedule regular reviews using a computer-based diary. Learn how to be
adaptive and flexible in life.

4. Achieve Goals
 When you have achieved a goal, take the time to enjoy the satisfaction of having
done so. If the goal is a significant one, reward yourself appropriately. This can
build your self-confidence.
