• This is the first (1) assessment task you must successfully complete to be deemed competent
in this unit of competency.
• The Knowledge Test is comprised of thirteen (13) written questions
• You must respond to all questions and submit them to your Trainer/Assessor.
• You must answer all questions to the required level, e.g. provide an answer within the
required word limit, to be deemed satisfactory in this task
Applicable conditions:
• This knowledge test to be completed in 3 hours and are conducted as open book assessment
(this means you can refer to your textbook during the test).

• You must complete the task independently.
• No marks or grades are allocated for this assessment task. The outcome of the task will be
Satisfactory or Not Satisfactory.

• Where a student’s answers are deemed not satisfactory after the first attempt, a resubmission
attempt will be allowed. After a failed second attempt the student is will pay additional fees of

This assessment task is designed to evaluate student’s knowledge essential to calculate costs of
construction work in a range of contexts and industry settings and knowledge regarding the
following:
• Knowledge of the accuracy and detail required in costing estimates for construction work
• Knowledge of the construction terminology used in plans and specifications for construction
work
• Knowledge of the contents and impact of job safety analyses (JSA) and safe work method
statements (SWMS) on costing construction work
• Knowledge of the environmental and sustainability requirements relevant to the costing
being determined
• Knowledge of the procedures for applying the Goods and Services Tax (GST) to costings
• Knowledge of the procedures for determining wages and overhead costs relevant to a
quotation for construction work
• Knowledge of the international system of units (SI) of measurements relevant to the
construction industry
• Knowledge of the process of estimating and costing construction work
• Knowledge of the quality requirements of construction projects and their impact on time
required for completion
• Knowledge of the relevant statutory and authority requirements related to estimating and
costing construction work
• Knowledge of the sources of information on material requirements and processes for

Task instructions
This assessment task requires the student to cost three (3) different construction jobs.
For each construction job to be completed, you are required to complete the following activities:
• The student will be required to bring all necessary PPEs required to complete this activity.
Construction job 2: Construct a timber fence along the boundaries of the building as per the image
shown below.
Materials specifications:
Construction job 3: Install external cladding based on the job specifications provided below.
Job specifications:
• Produce a set-out rod for a minimum height of 2.1 metres using the effective cover of a timber or
hardwood weatherboard.
• Install weatherproofing, a vapour barrier and flashing.
• Fix the two (2) different profiled weatherboards to an eave height of at least 2.1 metres,
incorporating an internal and an external corner with stops, flashings and sarking for a window
and a door.
• Install a minimum of the following two (2) types of external cladding panels, incorporating an
internal and an external corner, abutting a window or door, and joints between boards.
• Attach vertical and horizontal cladding to frames.
Further, ITI must ensure the construction site must meet the requirements given in the table below.
ITI must provide the student with the plans, specifications and drawings of the
worksite. ❑

• The trainer/assessor must assign a supervisor to each student or take on the role of Supervisor.
• The trainer/assessor must arrange a worksite for the student.
• The worksite must meet the requirements given in the ‘Worksite requirements’ section given
above.
• The trainer/assessor must arrange for a customer that will discuss the job specifications
mentioned in the assessment task.
• The trainer or Supervisor will supervise/observe the work by standing near the working location.
The student will be required to bring all necessary PPEs required to complete this activity.
