WRITING TIPS
Strengthen fine motor skills
• Fine motor skills are needed for children to build those muscles and
be able to properly hold a pencil.
• Fine motor skills are FUN. Play with play-dough, practice with
scissors, build with Legos, or anything that requires the child to
use their hands.

2. WORK ON TRACING
• Tracing and line work are also important aspects to writing. The
more they trace the easier it becomes to naturally write.

3. Switch it up
• Changing writing surfaces and utensils keeps it interesting for the
child and allows them to experiment with various arm and hand
motions.

4. Start small
• If the child is not grasping the concept of letter writing, allow
them to write on big surfaces rather than starting them off
confined to a lined page. It can also be beneficial to practice simple
line formations, curves, and circles.

5. Keep it fun. Don’t stress!

• All children do not develop at the same level, and some require
additional assistance from an OT. Needing extra help or not being
perfect is never a bad thing. There are adults in all fields that
struggle with fine motor skills for a variety of reasons that also
impacts their writing skills. IT WILL BE OKAY.
