ABSTRACT

Education is about learning skills and knowledge. It also means helping people to learn how to do
things and supporting them to think about what they learn. Universal basic education is a key
requirement for social justice, but it must be developed and delivered culturally sensitively. A
nongovernmental organization (NGO) is independent of the government whose primary mission
is not commercial and focuses on social, cultural, environmental, educational, and other issues.
NGOs play a very significant role in the education sector in many developing countries and are
becoming increasingly important participants in educational programs and implementing
education policy. Volunteering as a teacher at an NGO (non-governmental organization) can be a
rewarding and fulfilling experience.
INTRODUCTION

Education is a weapon to improve one’s life. It is probably the most important tool to
change one’s life. Education for a child begins at home. It is a lifelong process that ends with death.
Education certainly determines the quality of an individual’s life. Education improves one’s
knowledge, and skills and develops the personality and attitude. Education enables individuals to
put their potential to optimal use. Moreover, it makes them a thinker and correct decision-makers.
This is possible because of getting access to knowledge from the external world. Thus, education
opens new windows to the outside world.

NGOs are organizations that strive to do social good for the welfare of the
underprivileged strata of society. Their sole motive behind their existence is to
help, contribute, and bring up the underprivileged society who often are not given very
much priority when it comes to the development and improvement of their welfare.
Every NGO thus exists as a non-profit institution. Helping the underprivileged section of
society is of utmost importance in a country like India, as they make up a huge proportion of
our population. This can be done with the help of NGOs who have the know-how of how to
take these matters in a strategic way.

Aakanksha is a Non-governmental organization whose primary focus is the education

of underprivileged children. They believe that every kid deserves to learn, live and dream fully
without their socio-economic background holding them back. They mainly conduct academic
and extracurricular classes for them thrice a week and try their best to do it in the most creative
and fun way possible. They also help them explore their hidden talents, improve their
communication skills, be self-sufficient and know that they are capable of anything, and ensure
they are ready to face the challenges and competitions of the real world.

EXPERIENCE

Volunteering as a teacher at an NGO (non-governmental organization) can be a rewarding and

fulfilling experience. In this report, I will discuss my experience volunteering as a teacher at
an NGO that focuses on providing education to underprivileged children in a developing
country.

I began my volunteer work as a teacher at the NGO in February, 2021. The organizationwas
started by a team of youth for the betterment of children from poor economic backgrounds.
The aim of the organization is to equip the children with the knowledge, skills and exposure
required to carve their own paths towards their dreams. My role as a teacher was to provide
Math instruction to students and coordinating extra-curricular sessions.

When I first met the kids, I was struck by the lack of resources available to the students and
teachers. The classrooms were overcrowded, and there were not enough books or materials for
the students to use. Despite these challenges, the students were eager to learn and were very
motivated to improve their skills. We had to conduct online classes during Covid lockdown.

I quickly realized that my role as a teacher went beyond just providing instruction in the
classroom. Many of the students came from families that were struggling to make ends meet,
and they often faced difficult home lives. As a result, I often found myself providing emotional
support and encouragement to the students.

I was also a part in coordinating extra-curricular activities for the kids. It was a way to identify
their talents and encourage them. Also, even I got a chance to learn new things from them.
The experience of volunteering as a teacher at the NGO was both challenging and rewarding.
While the lack of resources and difficult home lives of the students made teaching a
challenge at times, it was also incredibly fulfilling to see the progress that the students made.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my experience was the positive impact that my teaching
had on the students. Many of the students improved their mathematical skills significantly
during my time at the NGO, and I was proud to see them gain confidence in their abilities.

Overall, volunteering as a teacher at the NGO was a transformative experience. It allowed me

to make a difference in the lives of underprivileged children, and I am grateful for the
opportunity to have been a part of this organization. I would encourage anyone who is
interested in making a positive impact in the world to consider volunteering as a teacher at an
NGO.
