SECTION 05 12 00
PART 1 - GENERAL
A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including Divisions 00 and 01 Specification
Sections, apply to this Section.
1.2 SUMMARY
A. This Section includes structural steel, as defined in the AISC Manual of Steel Construction,
“Code of Standard Practice,” and as otherwise indicated.
B. Related Sections:
1. Division 01 Section "Quality Requirements" for independent testing agency procedures
and administrative requirements.
2. Division 05 Section "Metal Fabrications" for miscellaneous steel fabrications and other
metal items not defined as structural steel.
3. Division 05 Section "Metal Stairs."
4. Division 09 Section "Painting and Coating" for surface-preparation and painting
requirements.
5. Division 13 Section “Pre-Engineered Metal Building Systems” for additional Pre-
Engineered Metal Building requirements.
1.3 DEFINITIONS
A. Connections: Provide details of simple shear connections required by the Contract Documents
to be selected or completed by structural-steel fabricator, including comprehensive engineering
design by a qualified professional engineer, to withstand loads indicated and comply with other
information and restrictions indicated.
1. Select and complete connections using schematic details indicated and AISC 360.
2. Use LRFD.
1.5 SUBMITTALS
A. Product Data for each type of product specified; in compliance with Division 01 Section
“Submittal Procedures”.
D. Paint Compatibility Certificates: From manufacturers of topcoats applied over shop primers,
certifying that shop primers are compatible with topcoats.
E. Control Submittals
1. Mill test reports signed by manufacturers, certifying that their products comply with
requirements, including the following:
a. Structural steel, including chemical and physical properties.
b. Bolts, nuts, and washers, including mechanical properties and chemical analysis.
c. Direct-tension indicators.
d. Shop primers.
e. Non-shrink grout.
2. Shop and field inspection reports.
3. Design calculations for all connections not detailed on Contract Documents. Calculations
shall be performed by a qualified professional engineer and shall bear the engineer’s seal.
4. Certifications that welders, both in shop and in field, have satisfactorily passed AWS
qualifications within the past 12 months for the type of welds being made.
B. Erector Qualifications: Engage an ACSE installer who participates in the AISC certification
program and is designated an AISC-certified erector, Category ACSE.
E. Welding Standards: Comply with applicable provisions of AWS D1.1 "Structural Welding
Code--Steel."
1. Present evidence that each welder has satisfactorily passed AWS qualification tests for
welding processes involved and, if pertinent, has undergone recertification.
2. Any welder found producing unsatisfactory work, even though certified, shall be
immediately recertified or replaced with a qualified, certified welder.
3. If recertification of welders is required, retesting and recertification are the Contractor’s
responsibility.
4. Welders and welding operators performing work on bottom-flange, demand-critical
welds shall pass the supplemental welder qualification testing, as required by AWS D1.8.
FCAW-S and FCAW-G shall be considered separate processes for welding personnel
qualification.
F. Pre-installation Conference: Conduct conference at least 35 days prior to start of steel work.
Conduct conference at project site to comply with requirements in Division 01 Section “Project
Meetings”. Minutes of the meeting shall be recorded, typed, and printed by the Contractor and
distributed to all parties concerned within 5 days of the meeting.
A. Deliver structural steel to Project site in such quantities and at such times to ensure continuity of
installation.
B. Store materials to permit easy access for inspection and identification. Keep steel members off
ground by using pallets, platforms, or other supports. Protect steel members and packaged
materials from erosion and deterioration.
1. Store fasteners in a protected place in sealed containers with manufacturer’s labels intact.
Clean and relubricate bolts and nuts that become dry or rusty before use.
2. Fasteners may be repackaged provided Owner’s testing and inspecting agency observes
repackaging and seals containers.
3. Comply with manufacturer’s written recommendations for cleaning and lubricating
ASTM F 1852 fasteners and for retesting fasteners after lubrication.
4. Do not store materials on structure in a manner that might cause distortion or damage to
members or supporting structures. Repair or replace damaged materials or structures as
directed.
1.8 COORDINATION
A. Coordinate selection of shop primers with topcoats to be applied over them. Comply with paint
and coating manufacturers' recommendations to ensure that shop primers and topcoats are
compatible with one another.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
F. Non-High-Strength Bolts, Nuts, and Washers: ASTM A 307, Grade A; carbon-steel, hex-head
bolts, carbon-steel nuts, and flat, unhardened steel washers (ASTM A36).
1. Finish: Hot-dip zinc coating, ASTM A 153, Class C, unless noted otherwise.
G. High-Strength Bolts, Nuts, and Washers: ASTM A 325, Type 1, heavy hex steel structural
bolts, heavy hex carbon-steel nuts (ASTM A563 Grade DH), and hardened carbon-steel washers
(ASTM F436 Type 1).
1. Finish: Hot-dip zinc coating, ASTM A 153, Class C, unless noted otherwise.
2. Direct-Tension Indicators: ASTM F 959, Type 325.
a. Finish: Plain, uncoated.
2.2 PRIMER
C. Galvanizing Repair Paint: High-zinc-dust-content paint for regalvanizing welds and repair-
painting galvanized steel, with dry film containing not less than 93 percent zinc dust by weight,
and complying with DOD-P-21035A or SSPC-Paint 20.
2.3 GROUT
2.4 FABRICATION
A. Fabricate and assemble structural steel in shop to greatest extent possible. Fabricate structural
steel according to AISC specifications referenced in this Section and in Shop Drawings.
1. Camber structural steel members where indicated.
2. Fabricate beams with rolling camber up.
3. Identify high-strength structural steel according to ASTM A 6 and maintain markings
until steel has been erected.
4. Mark and match-mark materials for field assembly.
5. Fabricate for delivery a sequence that will expedite erection and minimize field handling
of structural steel.
6. Complete structural steel assemblies, including welding of units, before starting shop-
priming operations.
7. Comply with fabrication tolerance limits of AISC's "Code of Standard Practice for Steel
Buildings and Bridges" for structural steel.
C. Finishing: Accurately mill ends of columns and other members transmitting loads in bearing.
D. Holes: Provide holes required for securing other work to structural steel framing and for
passage of other work through steel framing members, as shown on Shop Drawings.
1. Cut, drill, or punch holes perpendicular to metal surfaces. Do not flame-cut holes or
enlarge holes by burning. Drill holes in bearing plates.
2. Weld threaded nuts to framing and other specialty items as indicated to receive other
work.
3. Shop-drill or punch holes in members as required for bolts to secure structural steel,
wood blocking, nailers, sash, etc. Burning of holes is not allowed.
4. Drilling, cutting, or punching in members in the field for fastening of blocking, nailers,
sash, etc., is not permitted without written approval from A/E.
5. Provide holes required for securing other work to structural steel framing, and for the
passage of other work through steel framing members, as indicated. Provide threaded
nuts welded to framing, and other specialty items as shown to receive work.
E. Lateral Bracing
1. Lateral bracing is designed as indicated on the Drawings. Fabricator shall engineer
connections based on criteria provided on the Drawings.
2. Gusset plates for connections shall be detailed and furnished by the fabricator and shall
meet the requirements of the AISC’s “Steel Manual of Construction, 13th Edition” Part
13. This shall apply whenever required by connection details, even though such gussets
are not shown on the design Drawings.
3. Spacer plates shall be provided with all double-angle and double-channel members.
B. Install and tighten non-high-strength bolts, except where high-strength bolts are indicated.
C. Install and tighten high-strength bolts according to RCSC's "Specification for Structural Joints
Using ASTM A 325 or A 490 Bolts."
1. Bolts: ASTM A 325 high-strength bolts, unless otherwise indicated.
2. Connection Type: Snug-tightened, unless indicated as slip-critical, direct-tension, or
tensioned shear/bearing connections.
D. Weld Connections: Comply with AWS D1.1 for procedures, tolerance, appearance and quality
of welds, and methods used in correcting welding work.
1. Assemble and weld built-up sections by methods that will maintain true alignment of
axes without warp. Do not exceed tolerances in AISC 303 for mill material.
A. Anchor Bolts: Furnish anchor bolts and other connectors required for securing structural steel
to foundations and other in-place Work. Furnish templates and other devices as necessary for
presetting bolts and other anchors to accurate locations.
2.7 SHOP-PRIMING
B. Surface Preparation: Clean surfaces to be painted. Remove loose rust, loose mill scale, and
spatter, slag, or flux deposits. Prepare surfaces according to SSPC specifications as follows:
1. SSPC-SP 6 "Commercial Blast Cleaning," for unprotected or exposed steel and where
indicated.
2.8 GALVANIZING
A. Hot-Dip Galvanized Finish: Apply zinc coating by the hot-dip process to structural steel
indicated for galvanizing according to ASTM A 123.
1. All structural steel that is exterior or exposed to earth shall be galvanized. Do not shop-
paint.
2. See Drawings for structural steel required to be galvanized.
A. Contractor will engage an independent testing and inspecting agency to perform shop
inspections and tests and to prepare test reports.
1. Testing agency will conduct and interpret tests and state in each report whether test
specimens comply with or deviate from requirements.
2. All welded connections on members to be galvanized shall be shop inspected prior to
galvanizing. Any defects shall be corrected prior to galvanizing of the members.
3. Fillet welds shall be visually inspected on a periodic basis. A minimum of 25% of welds
shall be inspected. If defects are found, all welds shall be visually inspected and defects
corrected.
4. All full or partial penetration welds shall be inspected by either radiographic or ultrasonic
inspection.
5. Provide testing agency with access to places where structural steel Work is being
fabricated or produced so required inspection and testing can be accomplished.
D. Shop-bolted connections will be tested and inspected according to RCSC's "Specification for
Structural Joints Using ASTM A 325 or A 490 Bolts."
1. Direct-tension indicator gaps will be verified to comply with ASTM F 959, Table 2.
E. In addition to visual inspection, shop-welded connections will be inspected and tested according
to AWS D1.1 and the inspection procedures listed below, at testing agency's option.
1. Liquid Penetrant Inspection: ASTM E 165.
2. Magnetic Particle Inspection: ASTM E 709, performed on root pass and on finished
weld. Cracks or zones of incomplete fusion or penetration will not be accepted.
3. Radiographic Inspection: ASTM E 94 and ASTM E 142, minimum quality level "2-2T."
4. Ultrasonic Inspection: ASTM E 164.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 EXAMINATION
A. Prior to starting work, inspect installed work of other trades and verify that such work is
complete to the point where work of this Section may properly commence. Notify the A/E in
writing of conditions detrimental to the proper and timely completion of the work.
B. Do not begin installation until unsatisfactory conditions are resolved. Beginning work
constitutes acceptance of site conditions and responsibility for defective installation caused by
prior observable conditions.
3.2 PREPARATION
A. Provide temporary shores, guys, braces, and other supports during erection to keep structural
steel secure, plumb, and in alignment against temporary construction loads and loads equal in
intensity to design loads. Remove temporary supports when permanent structural steel,
connections, and bracing are in place, unless otherwise indicated.
1. At no time shall the structure be subjected to loads in excess of the design loads stated on
the Drawings.
3.3 ERECTION
A. Set structural steel accurately in locations and to elevations indicated and according to AISC
specifications referenced in this Section.
B. Base and Bearing Plates: Clean concrete bearing surfaces of bond-reducing materials and
roughen surfaces prior to setting base and bearing plates. Clean bottom surface of base and
bearing plates.
1. Set base and bearing plates for structural members on wedges, shims, or setting nuts as
required.
2. Tighten anchor bolts after supported members have been positioned and plumbed. Do
not remove wedges or shims but, if protruding, cut off flush with edge of base or bearing
plate prior to packing with grout.
3. Pack grout solidly between bearing surfaces and plates so no voids remain. Finish
exposed surfaces, protect installed materials, and allow to cure.
a. Comply with manufacturer's instructions for proprietary grout materials.
b. Base plates must be grouted before the connection is subject to any significant
lateral load or bending moment.
C. Maintain erection tolerances of structural steel within AISC's "Code of Standard Practice for
Steel Buildings and Bridges."
D. Align and adjust various members forming part of complete frame or structure before
permanently fastening. Before assembly, clean bearing surfaces and other surfaces that will be
in permanent contact. Perform necessary adjustments to compensate for discrepancies in
elevations and alignment.
1. Level and plumb individual members of structure.
G. Do not enlarge unfair holes in members by burning or by using drift pins. Ream holes that must
be enlarged to admit bolts.
A. Install and tighten non-high-strength bolts, except where high-strength bolts are indicated.
B. Install and tighten high-strength bolts according to RCSC's "Specification for Structural Joints
Using ASTM A 325 or A 490 Bolts."
1. Bolts: ASTM A 325 high-strength bolts, unless otherwise indicated.
2. Connection Type: Snug-tightened, unless indicated as slip-critical, direct-tension, or
tensioned shear/bearing connections.
C. Weld Connections: Comply with AWS D1.1 for procedures, tolerances, appearance and quality
of welds, and methods used in correcting welding work.
1. Comply with AISC specifications referenced in this Section for bearing, adequacy of
temporary connections, alignment, and removal of paint on surfaces adjacent to field
welds.
2. Assemble and weld built-up sections by methods that will maintain true alignment of
axes without warp. Do not exceed tolerances in AISC’s “Code of Standard Practice for
Steel Buildings and Bridges” for mill material.
A. Contractor will engage an independent testing and inspecting agency to perform field
inspections and tests and to prepare test reports.

Work complies with or deviates from requirements.

B. Correct deficiencies in or remove and replace structural steel that inspections and test reports
indicate do not comply with specified requirements.
D. Field-bolted connections will be tested and inspected according to RCSC's "Specification for
Structural Joints Using ASTM A 325 or A 490 Bolts."
1. Direct-tension indicator gaps will be verified to comply with ASTM F 959, Table 2.
E. In addition to visual inspection, field-welded connections will be inspected and tested according
to AWS D1.1 and the inspection procedures listed below, at testing agency's option.

3.6 CLEANING
A. Touch-up Painting: Immediately after erection, clean field-welds, bolted connections, and
abraded areas of shop-paint. Apply paint to exposed areas using same material as used for shop
painting to comply with SSPC-PA1 for touching up shop-painted surfaces.
1. Apply by brush or spray to provide a minimum dry film thickness of 1.5 mils.
B. Galvanized Surfaces: Clean field-welds, bolted connections, and abraded areas and apply
galvanizing repair paint according to ASTM A 780.

7. Complete connection calculations, bearing the seal of a Civil or Structural
Engineer registered in the state in which the Project is located, shall accompany
the appropriate Shop Drawing submittals.
a. The Engineer responsible for connection design shall review and provide
Shop Drawing Stamp on all structural steel shop drawings prior to
submitting to the A/E.
E. Control Submittals

3. Pack grout solidly between bearing surfaces and plates so no voids remain.
Finish exposed surfaces, protect installed materials, and allow to cure.
a. Comply with manufacturer's instructions for proprietary grout materials.
b. Base plates must be grouted before the connection is subject to any
significant lateral load or bending moment.
C. Maintain erection tolerances of structural steel within AISC's "Code of Standard Practice
for Steel Buildings and Bridges."
D. Align and adjust various members forming part of complete frame or structure before
permanently fastening. Before assembly, clean bearing surfaces and other surfaces that
will be in permanent contact. Perform necessary adjustments to compensate for
discrepancies in elevations and alignment.
1. Level and plumb individual members of structure.
G. Do not enlarge unfair holes in members by burning or by using drift pins. Ream holes
that must be enlarged to admit bolts.
A. Install and tighten non-high-strength bolts, except where high-strength bolts are
indicated.
B. Install and tighten high-strength bolts according to RCSC's "Specification for Structural
Joints Using High Strength Bolts."
1. Bolts: ASTM F3125, Grade F1852 or Grade A325 high-strength bolts, unless
otherwise indicated.
2. Connection Type: Snug-tightened, unless indicated as slip-critical, direct-
tension, or tensioned shear/bearing connections.
C. Weld Connections: Comply with AWS D1.1 for procedures, tolerances, appearance and
quality of welds, and methods used in correcting welding work.
1. Comply with AISC specifications referenced in this Section for bearing,
adequacy of temporary connections, alignment, and removal of paint on surfaces
adjacent to field welds.
2. Assemble and weld built-up sections by methods that will maintain true
alignment of axes without warp. Do not exceed tolerances in AISC’s “Code of
Standard Practice for Steel Buildings and Bridges” for mill material.
A. Owner will engage an independent testing and inspecting agency to perform field
inspections and tests and to prepare test reports.
1. Testing agency will conduct and interpret tests and state in each report whether
tested Work complies with or deviates from requirements.
2. Fillet welds shall be visually inspected on a periodic basis. A minimum of 25%
of the field welds shall be inspected. If defects are found, all fillet welds shall be
inspected and defects corrected.
3. 100% full penetration welds shall be inspected by either radiographic or
ultrasonic inspection.
B. Correct deficiencies in or remove and replace structural steel that inspections and test
reports indicate do not comply with specified requirements.
3.6 CLEANING
B. Galvanized Surfaces: Clean field-welds, bolted connections, and abraded areas and apply
galvanizing repair paint according to ASTM A780.
