1. PM Narendra Modi has commissioned Low Power FM Transmitters of capacity of 100 Watt at 91 locations. These
transmitters of have been installed in 84 districts of 20 states. With this, the network of transmitters of All India Radio has
increased from 524 to 615. The addition will further boost the coverage of AIR to 73.5% of the population of the country.
Left Wing Extremism hit areas, Aspirational Districts and border areas of the country have been given priority for the
installation of the transmitters. Besides, the Government has further approved installation of 63 more FM transmitters in

3. A mutual firefighting Exercise named “AGNI DAMAN-23” was conducted at 29 Field


Ammunition Depot, Dehu Road under the aegis of Headquarter Southern Command, Pune.
The exercise aimed to emphasise the need for awareness and training of men on
firefighting as also to exercise the capabilities of combined forces of all agencies including
military and civil. The exercise was a landmark endeavour in synergizing all the firefighting

4. India announced to join the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s (ICAO) Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for
International Aviation (CORSIA) and the Long-Term Aspirational Goals (LTAG) from 2027. This was announced at a meeting
of the Parliament’s Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Civil Aviation held in New Delhi. The meeting was chaired by
the Minister of Civil Aviation Jyotiraditya Scindia. The ICAO has been tasked to reduce carbon emissions from international
civil aviation as one of its focus areas. The ICAO has adopted several key aspirational goals including - 2% Annual Fuel
Efficiency Improvement through 2050, and Carbon Neutral Growth and Net Zero by 2050. India committed to net zero by

5. The Centre has extended the deadline by 6 months to obtain the mandatory Electric Vehicle (EV) Battery Safety Test
Certification from the Ministry of Heavy Industries. The certification was compulsory for manufacturers from April 1, 2023, if
they wanted subsidies under various EV-promotion schemes. Now, the ministry has given an extension till October 1, 2023.
The incentives were under the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles in India (FAME-II) Scheme and
Production-Linked Incentives (PLI) schemes. The certification aimed at enhancing human safety of the battery used in EVs by
requiring checks at 3 levels - the cell, battery management system (BMS), and the battery pack. {Read more}

7. On May 2, First Republic Bank has become the 3rd large bank in the US (with
assets over $200 billion) to fail, after Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank in
recent times. First Republic grew rapidly through deposits from wealthy
individuals and companies. Many of the bank’s accounts had deposits well north
of the federally-insured $250,000. Once Silicon Valley Bank was seized by the
government, clients pulled their money, fearful their deposits were in danger.

8. On May 2, PhonePe announced that it has gone live with the “UPI Lite” feature on its app. The
feature allows users to quickly initiate low-value payments under Rs 200 from their UPI Lite
account without entering a PIN. Users can load up to Rs 2,000 in their UPI Lite account. The
transaction is processed directly by debiting the on-device UPI Lite balance without involving the
customers’ banks’ core banking systems. UPI Lite was launched by the RBI in September, 2022

9. Growth in the Asia-Pacific region is projected to increase to 4.6% in 2023 from the 3.8% recorded in 2022, according to

10. On May 2, Airtel Payments Bank collaborated with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to roll out Face
Authentication for AePS (Aadhaar-enabled Payment System) at its 5 lakh banking points. Airtel Payments Bank is amongst
the first four banks to offer Face Authentication for AePS in the country. NPCI’s AePS allows customers to carry out financial
and non-financial transactions at any banking point using their Aadhaar number or virtual ID to access their Aadhaar-linked
bank account. Until now, transactions were being authenticated using the customer’s Aadhaar number and fingerprint or Iris

11. Foreign Portfolio Investors’ (FPIs) holdings in many of the Private Sector Banks went down marginally in FY23 as they
pulled out nearly Rs 29,921 Crore from Banking and Financial Services sector. This sector was the 3 rd highest loser of FPI
money in FY23 after IT Services sector (₹51,138 Crore) and Oil & Gas sector (₹37,674 Crore). According to latest shareholding
data, foreign portfolio investors’ (FPIs’) holding in RBL Bank went down by 4% in the previous fiscal to 25% as of March 2023
quarter. In IndusInd Bank too, FPIs have trimmed their exposure by 4% to 42.16% during this period. However, FPIs
increased their stakes in Yes Bank (by 12%), IDFC First Bank (by 6%) and Axis Bank (by 2%) in FY23. {Read more}

12. On May 2, Merchant commerce omni-channel platform Pine Labs announced the acceptance of Digital Rupee (e₹ or

outlets in Mumbai and Bengaluru via dynamic QR, built within its smart Android PoS terminals. Incorporated in Singapore,

17. On May 1, Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Navy conducted the successful maiden
test trial of ‘ADC-150’ from IL 38SD aircraft off the coast of Goa. ‘ADC-150’ is an indigenously designed and developed Air
Droppable Container with 150 kg payload capacity. The trial was conducted to enhance the naval operational logistics
capabilities by providing quick response to meet the requirement of critical engineering stores to ships (under distress).
Three DRDO laboratories - Naval Science & Technological Laboratory (NSTL), Visakhapatnam; Aerial Delivery Research &
Development Establishment (ADRDE), Agra and Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), Bengaluru - have been

18. On May 1, INS Satpura & INS Delhi arrived at Singapore to participate in the 1st edition of “ASEAN India Maritime Exercise
(AIME-2023)” scheduled from 2 to 8 May, 2023. The Harbour Phase of the exercise was scheduled to be held at Changi Naval
Base from 2 to 4 May 2023 and the Sea Phase was scheduled to be conducted from 7 to 8 May, 2023 in the South China Sea.
AIME-2023 provided an opportunity for Indian Navy and ASEAN navies to work together closely and conduct seamless
operations in the maritime domain. INS Delhi, India’s first indigenously-built guided missile destroyer and INS Satpura, an

25. In May 2023, the Russian lender Sberbank unveiled its chatbot “GigaChat” as a rival to OpenAI’s
sensational ChatGPT. At present, GigaChat is accessible only in an invite-only testing mode.
GigaChat’s ability to converse fluently and intelligently in Russian is its biggest distinguishing
feature when compared to other global neural networks. Sberbank is currently Russia’s largest
financial institution that is currently working towards becoming the country’s tech leader. GigaChat
is its latest innovation as part of its digital transformation drive. Sberbank is banking on GigaChat’s

26. On May 1, researchers at IIT Madras have developed a machine learning-based


computational tool named ‘GBMDriver’ (GlioBlastoma Mutiforme Drivers) for better
detection of cancer-causing tumours in the brain and spinal cord. Glioblastoma is a fast and
aggressively growing tumour in the brain and spinal cord. Although there has been research
undertaken to understand this tumour, therapeutic options remain limited with an expected
survival rate of less than 2 years from initial diagnosis. GBMDriver was developed specifically

27. On May 1, Air Marshal Narmdeshwar Tiwari took over as the new Air Officer
Commanding-in-Chief (AOC-in-C), South Western Air Command (SWAC) at Gandhinagar,

was commissioned in the Fighter Stream on June 7, 1986. He is an alumnus of the National
Defence Academy. He is a Qualified Flying Instructor as well as an Experimental Test Pilot.
Prior to assuming charge as the AOC-in-C SWAC, the Air Marshal was the Deputy Chief of the

28. On May 1, the Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC) appointed Odia physicist and
director of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Dr Ajit Kumar Mohanty, as the Chairman
of the Atomic Energy Commission and Secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy. Kumar will
hold the post till the age of 66, or till 10 October 2025. The Department of Atomic Energy comes
directly under the Prime Minister’s Office. Mohanty will replace outgoing secretary and chairman

42. On May 1, the World Economic Forum (WEF) released the report titled “Future of Jobs Report 2023”. The report
suggested that almost a quarter of jobs (23%) are expected to change in the next 5 years through growth of 10.2% and
decline of 12.3%. The report maps the jobs and skills of the future, tracking the pace of change. This is the 4th edition of the
report, which was first launched in 2016. As per the report, 44% of workers’ core skills are expected to change in the next 5
years. According to the estimates of the 803 companies surveyed for the report, employers anticipate 69 million new jobs to
be created and 83 million eliminated among the 673 million jobs corresponding to the dataset, a net decrease of 14 million
jobs, or 2% of current employment. As per the report, India will see a 22% churn as compared to global average of 23%. 61%
of Indian companies think broader applications of ESG standards will drive job growth, followed by increased adoption of
new technologies (59%) and broadening digital access (55%). The employment of data analysts and scientists, big data
specialists, AI machine learning specialists and cybersecurity professionals is expected to grow on average by 30% by 2027.

44. The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement in its annual report, released on May 2, announced that India has
surpassed China in sending more students to the United States in 2022. India sent 64,300 students to America in 2022, while
China’s number shrunk to 24,796. According to the ‘Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP)’, the number of
international students enrolled at kindergarten through grade 12 schools increased by 7.8% from 2021 to 2022 (3,887). No
K-12 schools hosted more than 700 international students in the calendar year 2022. Among the US states, California hosted

Power Projects. The Chutka and Mahi Banswara nuclear projects will be implemented
through a joint venture between NTPC and NPCIL called ‘ASHVINI’ (Anushakti Vidhyut
Nigam). Initially, the JV company will develop two Pressurized Heavy-Water Reactor
(PHWR) projects, Chutka Madhya Pradesh Atomic Power Project 2x700 MW and Mahi
Banswara Rajasthan Atomic Power Project 4x700 MW. This Nuclear Power projects is
expected to help the country in meeting its clean energy commitments to achieve net

48. On May 2, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) signed an MoU with RITES Limited for technical assistance
for Solid Waste Management (SWM) & Used Water Management (UWM) under ‘Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0’. The
Technical Support Unit (TSU) of RITES will assist SBM-U for a period of 3 years. The introduction of Used Water Management
(UWM) as a newly funded component for towns with less than 1 lakh population, has led to a paradigm shift in urban

49. On May 1, International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) and IHub-Data (IIIT Hyderabad) signed an MoU at
IIIT Hyderabad campus. This MoU aims to put in place a framework for cooperation and understanding between IFSCA and
IHub-Data, IIIT Hyderabad to collaborate in supporting and facilitating FinTech and TechFin entities. FinTechs and TechFins
registered with IHub-Data, IIIT Hyderabad may be facilitated to access IFSCA’s Regulatory and Innovation Sandbox and apply
to the ‘IFSCA (FinTech Incentive) Scheme 2022’. IHub-Data is a Technology Innovation Hub for Data Banks, Data Services, and
Data Analytics (IHub-Data) at IIIT Hyderabad which was established by IIIT Hyderabad under the National Mission on

Cooperation with focus on several key technology areas. The Multi-Sectoral Agreement
