Education is a must to prevent Terrorism

Terrorism:
Terrorism is defined as political violence in an asymmetrical conflict that is designed to induce terror and
psychic fear through the violent victimization and destruction targets.

CAUSES AND EFFECTS OF TERRORISM:

Terrorist acts can cause ripple effects through the economy that have negative impacts. The most
obvious is the direct economic destruction of property and lives. Terrorism indirectly affects the
economy by creating market uncertainty, loss of tourism, and increase insurance claims.

Education can play a major role to prevent the terrorism:

The studies and literature review revealed important aspects regarding the role of education in the fight
with terrorism although there was a limited number of studies. The relationship between education and
terrorism is not a linear depending on the duration, but rather a complex relation based on the content
of education involving the development and implementation of peace education processes aiming to
reduce the tendency towards terrorism and violence and reorganize the current course of content.

The government can play the part to increase a better system of education so that the young generation
would avoid attracting towards terrorism.

The education sector is often one of the most critical development interventions supported by
government as a way of strengthening peace building efforts during post conflict recovery, as well as
addressing long-term human development needs in fragile states. Prevention approaches are necessary
both countries that have never had a conflict as well as states that are in the very tenuous post conflict
recovery phase.

Conflicts can relapse very often and therefore prevention is essential as a peace building effort.

Studies have found that while education does not correlate with terrorist activity at across country level,
at an individual level many terrorists are well educated. A study of Middle Eastern and North African
youth demonstrates that individuals with secondary education who are unemployed or underemployed
have the highest risk of becoming radicalized.

Regardless of either lack of education in and of itself is a driver of radicalization, there seems to be a
general consensus that education is one of the most important tools to reach young people and
therefore can be used to address some of the push and pulls factor that may drive young people
towards violent extremism.

While researchers agree that one of the characteristics of a terrorist is normality, psycho-pathological
factors amongst group leadership can play a significant role.
Other theories over the causes of terrorism includes:
A skewed gender balance and high proportion of unmarried makes increases the association with
violence and instability. Political and criminally motivated violence is largely the work of young
unmarried men. Perception of deprivation and inequality, especially amongst culturally defined groups.
This can lead to civil violence, of which terrorism may be a part.

Education has a ability to shape a person’s skills, prospects, as well as their social surroundings, social
behaviour. As a result it may change the likelihood of violences through indirect processes. Several
researchers have looked into the affects of schooling on these intermediate outcomes, which could
build their chances in social rewards in village environment.

In many parts of the world young people and children are living lives of hopelessness and despair. A
quarter of old school age children live in countries in conflict, millions are displaced and millions more
growing up in communities through poverty. As a result more than 263 million children and young
people are now out of school, 63 million of them of primary school age. Without any education they will
face the future and broken with dreams, because the will be lack of skills to gain meaningful
employments and out of anger some of them will turn in violence. The sad part is that the terrorism
appears to give a twisted sense of purpose and belonging to the hopeless. And in communities
disadvantaged, terrorism can spend like a virus.

“Education is a world’s vaccine against terrorism.’’

We need to do all we can to ensure that young men and women in the most disadvantaged and
communities are not denied the opportunity to get education. We must do this for children and also for
ourselves. If we want to live in peaceful world, free of terrorists threat, we need to do to more inoculate
our children against terrorism.
