OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY

BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR LEARNERS

Occupational health and safety standards are in place to order the removal, lessening, or
replacement of job site hazards. OHS programs must also include material that helps lessen the
effects of the hazards.
Employers and company management are mandated to provide a safe working
environment for all of their employees.

WHAT IS Occupational Health and Safety (OHS)?

It is a planned system of working to prevent illness and injury where you work by
recognizing and identifying hazards and risks. - Health and safety procedure is the responsibility
of all persons in the computer and technology industries.

Occupational health and safety is concerned with addressing many types of workplace
hazards, such as:

• Chemicals
• Physical hazards
• Biological agents
• Psychological fallout
• Ergonomic issues
• Accidents

What is OHS Policy?

OHS Policy is a method of stating how you, your employees, contractors and visitors are
expected to behave when they are on Company property or performing Company related
activities. As an employer or responsible contractor, you are required by law to provide a
‘safe system of work’.
Here are 12 OHS policies in CSS:
1. Do not work alone so that there’s someone who can take care of you in case of an
emergency.
2. Always power off the computer and unplug the computer before working on it.
3. Take away any liquid near your working area to avoid getting electrocuted or
accidentally damaging computer parts.
4. Be careful with tools that may cause a short circuit.
5. Always ground or discharge yourself before touching any part of the computer.
6. Do not use excessive force if things don’t quite slip into place.
7. Clean the area before and after using it to maintain sanitation and prevent accidents.
8. Hold the components on the edges and do not touch the Integrated Circuit (IC)
parts.
9. Always wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with the
organization’s OHS procedures and practices.
10. Make sure that the pins are properly aligned when connecting a cable connector.
11. Contingency measures during workplace accidents, fire, and other emergencies are
recognized.
12. Use a brush, compressed air, or blower in cleaning the computer system.

OHS Standards

Occupational Health and Safety standards

1. Identify the hazard
2. Clear the area close to the hazard
3. Partition the hazard off or clearly identify the area to protect other people from harm
4. If the hazard is easily and safely cleared, then do so
If not…
5. Report the hazard to the appropriate person (such as teacher in charge, principal etc.)
to obtain assistance
6. Following clearing of the hazard fill out the correct documentation to assist in
identifying improved practice to reduce further incidence of hazards.

ACCIDENT REPORTS - Forms are used to give specific details with regards to the
accidents happened in the laboratory during experiments.
Accident reports contain the following details:
– Name of the person injured
– Date and time of the accident
– Type of injury
– First aid given
– Action taken to prevent further accidents

All fire exits should be kept clear of from obstacles. All students have a responsibility to
make sure that chairs, empty boxes or any other type of obstacle are not placed in or near fire
exit doorways. • All corridors also need to have equipment stored on one side only to ensure
that in the event of an emergency there is a clear exit.
5S KEY TO PRODUCTIVE AND SAFER WORKPLACE

5S is a systematic way of organizing workplaces by eliminating waste, improving flow,

and reducing the number of processes where possible. It is pioneered by Toyota Motor Company
that applies the standard housekeeping practices in the workplace through the five principles of
Sort (seiri), Set in order (seiton), Shine (seiso), Standardize (seiketsu), and Sustain (shitsuke).
A cluttered and untidy workplace can lead to low productivity, worker dissatisfaction,
and re-occurring accidents. As one of the core principles of kaizen, 5S can help identify and
eliminate wastage to achieve a more organized and safer working environment. 5S safety is
commonly applied in manufacturing, warehouses, offices, and hospitals but 5S principles as
follows can be applied to any workplace.
Sort (Seiri)
All items, equipment, and work materials should be neatly arranged and all unnecessary objects
should be removed. The objective is to reduce clutter and make it easier to locate the resources
needed for work.

Set in Order (Seiton)

All items, equipment, and work materials should be in optimal locations. The objective is to
maximize accessibility, free up space, and prevent accidents from occurring by removing
unnecessary obstacles.

Shine (Seiso)
The workspace, including all tools, equipment, and machinery, should be cleaned on a regular
basis. The objective is to make the workspace safe, waste-free, and conducive to productivity.

Standardize (Seiketsu)
The processes for sorting, order, and cleanliness should be standardized and implemented across
all offices and branches of operation. The objective is for all aspects and branches of operation to
consistently gain the benefits of practicing seiri, seiton, and seiso.
Sustain/Self-discipline (Shitsuke)
The organization should have the initiative to continuously and consistently practice the 5S
methodology. The objective is to maximize the business’s potential by removing all obstacles

LEARNING COMPETENCY

Inspect and test the computer systems and networks
