Occupational Health and Safety Procedure

LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

Background Information for Learners:

Occupational Health and Safety (OHS)

An Information and communication technology (ICT) student should know how to behave when working
in the computer laboratory, as well as implement a safe way of accomplishing every task.

Safety practices should be learned early and always adheres in working with any electrical and electronic device,
including personal computers and its peripherals. The basis for this process begins with Occupational Health and Safety
Policies.

As a hopeful computer technician, you should be alert of all probable risks in the workplace. It is a must to
follow appropriate procedures for handling computer equipment.

Failure to follow the recommended safety procedures could result damage to equipment, claims for damage
from the owner of the property and data, harm, or even death.

Health and safety are of the outmost importance. People do not just realize just how dangerous it can be,
usually they often ignore the risk involved in opening and operating a computer. It is vital to stay safe in every working
conditions. Whether you are a professional or a beginner staying safe must be put into priority to prevent troubles and
damage to any person or to any object in a work area.

A safe work space is clean, systematized, and well-lit. A hazardous computer component must dispose or
recycled properly. Make it a habit to follow guidelines that direct how to dispose specific items. When an individual
violates these rules, there can be legal penalties. To keep you safe, this module delivers the general and fire safety
strategies that protects the technician and the equipment.

General Safety Strategies

Here are some general safety guidelines:

The most important one is SWITCHING OFF. The first step is to stop the flow of electricity into your computer.
https://www.canstockphoto.com/illustration/turn-off.htm
https://askleo.com/can-computer-hacked-turned-off/

1. Turn off the power and unplug equipment before opening the case and performing service

2. Remove accessories and jewelry.

Removing conductive materials such as metal rings and watches is a must to avoid being shocked by
electricity.

3. Warning of the Senses

Be sensitive about smell on something burning, see a component that is burnt or hear something
that does not sound not normal, immediately stop what you are doing and make sure to check the
abnormality, remove and replace as soon as possible.

4. Never open a power supply or a monitor.

Even when unplugged power supplies can retain dangerous voltage.

5. Know where the fire extinguisher is located and learn how to use it.
6. Know where the first aid kit is located.

7. Keep food and drinks out of your workspace.

Fire Safety Guidelines

Make sure that a fire extinguisher is rated for class A, B, & C and it is within a reasonable distance from your
computer installation. If you leave your computer on and unattended for whatever reason, turn off the monitor during
your absence. Monitors generate high voltage internally which is potential to start an electrical fire.
Note: The switch for the monitor is usually located at the bottom, side or rear of the screen. Turning off the
monitor leaves the computer On and will not disrupt the computers operation or compromise data losses. When you
return, simply turn the monitors back on ant wait for few seconds to warm up. Ensure that your facilities meet local fire
safety codes.
When working with computer components, always consider the possibility of an accidental fire and prepare
how to react.
If there is a fire, you should follow these safety procedures
• Make sure to know all the locations of all exits for a fire escape route before beginning any work.

https://www.123rf.com/clipart-vector/emergency_exit.html?sti=mjganq2vxyj4pnqf37|&mediapopup=99439177

• Take a minute to think which way you would go to escape your place.
• Never fight a fire that is out of control or not contained.

• Get out of the building quickly in case of an out-of-control fire.

• Contact emergency services immediately for help.

Now that you are equipped with the knowledge on the OHSP used in configuration, In these videos, you will
learn about more safety measures to undertake before working troubleshooting computers. To watch the video
presentations just type in the following.

SOME BASIC PRECAUTIONS AND PROCEDURES:

• Before starting the installation, read carefully the documentation and procedures on any hardware and software
settings that may be required.

• Failure to do the proper jumper setting may cause damage to your CPU.

• Without an effective cooling fan, the CPU can overheat and cause damage to both CPU and the motherboard.

• Each bank must have the same size and type of memory installed in pairs.

• Before adding and removing any other system components, make sure that you unplug your power supply.

• Failure to do so may cause damage to your motherboard and in the system component.

• Test the computer, insuring that it meets the necessary system requirements before booting up.

• If the computer does not pass any of the power on self-test (POST), the computer will receive an irregular power
on self-test. An irregular POST is a beep code which is different from the standard beep which can either be no
beeps at all or a combination of different beeps.
