Look at the pictures. Read the story.

One day Ms Simasiku came to visit our school.

She is famous. We see her on television.

song for her.

13

9789991614762.indb 13 2014/03/04 12:09 PM

Ms Simasiku told us that she was born in the
Caprivi Region. She grew up on a farm, just
like us. After school she helped her mom fetch
water and feed the chickens.

She always listened to the radio. Now she has

her own programme on the radio. She also
works for One Africa television.

14

9789991614762.indb 14 2014/03/04 12:09 PM

She told us that we must study hard and try to
do work that we love when we are older.

We sang the national anthem together. Then

we said goodbye to Ms Simasiku.

14 Clever Jackal

Read this folktale from South Africa. What

animals do you think will be in the story?

One day Jackal was trotting through

a rocky place. He was hunting for
something to eat.

46

9789991614762.indb 46 2014/03/04 12:10 PM

Suddenly, something moved in front of him.

It was Lion. Jackal was clever and liked to play

tricks on Lion. 47

9789991614762.indb 47 2014/03/04 12:10 PM

Quickly, Jackal thought of a trick. “Help, help,
great Lion!” he cried. “Those rocks are going to
fall on us.”

Then Jackal
covered his
head with
his paws. He
pretended
to be very
frightened.

48

9789991614762.indb 48 2014/03/04 12:10 PM

“Save us, great Lion”, begged Jackal. “The
rocks are going to fall on us. You are strong.
Save us!”

Lion quickly put his strong shoulder to the rock.

“Oh, thank you, great Lion”, said Jackal. “You
have saved us.”

49

9789991614762.indb 49 2014/03/04 12:10 PM

“I’ll quickly fetch that tree to put under the
rock”, said Jackal. “Then you can let go of the
rock.”

Jackal ran away as fast as he could. Lion

waited and waited for Jackal, but of course
Jackal did not come back.
50

9789991614762.indb 50 2014/03/04 12:10 PM

Lion stayed there. But we

poor Lion.

Serena and

But they never

went near Ollie’s
cave.

54

9789991614762.indb 54 2014/03/04 12:10 PM

One day the
mermaids had
a fight. Serena
was cross and
she swam away.

Thabi looked for

her everywhere.
But she could
not find Serena.

55

9789991614762.indb 55 2014/03/04 12:10 PM

Suddenly,
Thabi heard the
sound of singing
coming from
Ollie’s cave. She
swam closer and
peeped inside.

Serena was tied

to a big seashell.
Ollie was fast
asleep.

56

9789991614762.indb 56 2014/03/04 12:10 PM

Thabi untied
her friend and
together they

octopus.

Serena and
Thabi decided
that they would
never fight again.
They decided
they would never
go near Ollie’s
cave again.
