GREENHOUSE GASES

Definition:
Gases that trap heat in the earth’s atmosphere.
The main Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) include:
• Carbon dioxide - CO2 - factory and vehicle
emissions
• Methane - CH4 - cattle rearing, solid waste
decomposition
• Fluorinated Gases - PFCs -(perfluorocarbons),
HFCs (Hydrofluorocarbons) - air conditioning,
aerosols, refrigerants,
• Nitrous oxide - N2O - burning fossil fuels, waste
decomposition, wastewater treatment, fertilizers
• Water vapor - H2O (gas) - lakes, oceans, ice caps

THE GREENHOUSE
EFFECT
• The greenhouse effect is a process that
occurs when gases in Earth's
atmosphere trap the Sun's heat.
• This process makes Earth much warmer
than it would be without an
atmosphere.
• The greenhouse effect is one of the
things that makes Earth a comfortable
place to live.

CAUSES OF GLOBAL
WARMING
Human activities are the main source of many greenhouse gases that contribute to
global warming.
Consumption based activities such as deforestation, manufacturing , mining,
agricultural, increase in the greenhouse effect and trap more heat on the earths
surface.

temperatures
• Sea level rise
• Change rainfall
patterns
• Loss of wildlife

• Increase of
diseases such
as dengue,
cholera, malaria

EFFECTS OF GLOBAL WARMING IN THE
CARIBBEAN
• Sea level rise
• Bleaching of coral
reefs
• Loss of wildlife
species and habitat
• Stronger
hurricanes
• Longer Dry season
and shorter wet
seasons
• Increase in
Flooding

STRATEGIES TO REDUCE GLOBAL
WARMING
There is no one approach to stopping or slowing global warming.
Each person, business, country state must work together to reduce their GHG emissions.
Here are some examples of mitigation (reduction) strategies that we can use to slow global
warming:
• Carpooling • Purchase locally
• Increase • Fuel efficient made products
renewable and hybrid • Reduce red
energy usage vehicles meat
• Reduce, reuse, • Energy consumption
recycle efficient • Ride the bus,
• Reforestation, appliances and walk or bike
afforestation bulbs more
