Explanation:

As we said before (UoE file, Unit 1) we


use these forms with verbs to add a
special meaning: necessity, obligation,
advice, suggestion, opinion and to talk
about possibility/ability or prohibition
in the present, the past or the future.

Examples
“He must leave work at 6:00 p.m.”
“I had to check my account due to a
fraud alert.”
“Ann can’t go to the bank for you. She is
sick.”

Note that there is no final -s on modal


forms in the third person singular.

The structure of most of the
modal verbs is the same:
