INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL SIGNAL

PROCESSING, AND SOME OF ITS APPLICATIONS
IN REAL WORLD

5
OUTLINE

 What is digital signal processing?

 The typical digital signal processing system

 Some digital signal processing applications

6
WHAT IS DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING?

 Signal:
Signal: is a description of the evolution of a physical phenomenon.
➢ A signal can be considered, for example, as a voltage or current that varies as a function of time.
➢ A digital signal, on the other hand, can be any sequence of numbers that can be stored in a computer memory or a piece of
hardware.

WHAT IS DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING?

 Processing:

Make sense of the information that has been described by the signal.

 There are two ways of processing:

➢ Analyze: understand the information carried by the signal and perhaps extract some more high level description.

➢ Synthesize: create a physical phenomenon that contains a certain amount of information, that we want to put out in the world.
Ex. use our cell phone or the radio, etc.

11
WHAT IS DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING?

 Digital signal processing (DSP):

Any operation performed on the digital signal depending on the particular application in hand.

 DSP operations examples:

1. Filtering: unwanted components or features can be removed or filtered out from an input digital signal.

12

 DSP operations examples:

2. Increase or decrease the sharpness in digital image processing.
