Module 3. HW1 – 3 Green Building in the Philippines

A green building's living signature uses efficient resources and sustainable materials. It
focuses mainly on reducing energy and water usage and trash generation. A green-designed
building has a lower negative influence on the environment and human health due to its passive
qualities, balancing man and nature. This method also stresses using natural ventilation systems
and creating healthy interior spaces within buildings. Furthermore, a green building can optimize
renewable resources, reducing energy and water expenses over time.
The advantages of green building are becoming more widely recognized in the Philippines.
Many enterprises have adopted green building in new constructions or redevelopments even before
government initiatives or monitoring of greening methods for the private sector.

1. TEXAS INSTRUMENTS PHILIPPINES CLARK

West Industrial State, Clark Freeport Zone

This facility's Gold accreditation in 2010 followed the Silver certification received by TI
Philippines' Baguio plant in 2009 - the first-ever grant to a Philippine structure. Some of TI Clark’s
green features are:

• Reflective roof with a section of vegetative roofing to reduce heat and water runoff
• Automated lighting system with sensors to take advantage of daylight
• Use of desiccant wheel air cooling system to provide dehumidified cooled air; this system
uses water as a refrigerant and is regenerated using waste heat.
• More than 96% of the construction waste is recycled
• Use of reclaimed water for flushing

Texas Instruments has been participating in the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED
program for years. The company’s Richardson, Texas RFAB was the first LEED Gold certified
semiconductor facility and since then, TI has continued its commitment to green building. With
facilities around the world, TI’s sustainable building program is truly an international endeavor
and the company’s assembly and test facility in Clark Zone, Philippines recently received a LEED
Gold certification.

This new 780,000 square foot building is the first LEED Gold certified building in the
Philippines. TI is also the owner of the first LEED certified building in the country, the Phase V
expansion in Baguio City.

Located on the former USA Clark airbase, a variety of sustainable construction and design
features were used including a reflective roof that also has a portion covered in vegetation, a
comprehensive waste diversion program that allowed the company to prevent 96 percent of the
construction waste from ending up in local landfills, the use of reclaimed water for toilet flushing,
and easy access to mass transit.

The new Clark Zone facility brings TI’s total green building portfolio to over 2 million
square feet of LEED certified buildings.
2. PIONEER HOUSE CDO

Don Apolinar Velez Street corner Mabini Street, Cagayan de Oro

Receiving LEED Platinum certification in 2015, this seven-story building features the following:

• Energy-saving elevators
• Fuel-saving generators with noise suppressors
• Shower facilities for employees/tenants who cycle or walk to work
• 100% LED lighting
Pioneer House CDO, the business headquarters of Pioneer Insurance here in Mindanao has
answered all these concerns. Built with meticulous design, this 7 storey building has achieved the
highest level of certification in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) by the
US Green Building Council, issuing body of LEED certification (USGBC). It is the second
building in the Philippines to receive platinum certification for Core and Shell Development in
this prestigious internationally recognized certification system. Zuellig Tower in Makati got the
first recognition in 2013.
Pioneer House CDO takes pride of the following features:

• Uses recycled water from an on-site water treatment and rainwater harvesting strategy for
100% of the property’s irrigation needs and flushing requirements.
• Bicycle storage racks and shower rooms are provided to allow building occupants the
option of riding bicycles going to work.
• Provides a green roof that has allocated areas for various plant species, as well as natural
infiltration, which minimizes runoff during rain
• Highly reflective roof that reduces heat island effect and helps decrease energy use
• Installation of double-glazed windows that combats energy loss, improves thermal
comfort, and reduces noise
• Energy efficient air conditioning system without the use of harmful refrigerants
• 90% of the building occupants have a view of the outdoors and 75% have access to daylight
• Installation of an energy and building management systems that provide monitoring of
energy use for individual systems to analyze future disintegration of efficiencies
• LED lights to increase savings on electric power consumption
• Implements the Green Cleaning Policy which uses sustainable Green Seal certified
products

With those facilities, Pioneer House CDO has made the difference. Prior to the existence of
this building, all the rainwater on its site were drained to the streets and added to the city’s flood
water. Today, the rainwater harvesting strategy of Pioneer House CDO has utilized rain and
lessened the floodwater especially along Velez Street

3. MIND MUSEUM
JY Campos park, 3rd Ave
The Mind Museum, located in the central neighborhood of Bonifacio Global City, is not
only a learning facility but also an example of environmentally conscious construction. The US
Green Building Council has officially accredited the country's first world-class science museum
as LEED Gold (USGBC). The sustainable features of the facility include the following:

• Water and energy efficiency

The Mind Museum cleans with collected rainwater and condensate water,
saving over 70% of potable water used for sewage transportation. Because of its
efficient HVAC (heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, and cooling) system saves
22 percent more energy than an ASHRAE (American Society of Heating,
Refrigeration, and Air-Conditioning Engineers) certified building. Its lighting
system is made up of 95% LED, which is the most cost-effective and
environmentally friendly lighting available today.

The museum also has solar-assisted air conditioners integrated into its
offices and solar panels that help illuminate a large area of the site.

The botanical garden is one of the museum's highlights. It has non-invasive

flora that enhances water absorption on the ground, preventing flooding.

• Eco-friendly building materials

Steel and other metal criteria were satisfied using highly recycled products.
Landscape supplies were purchased locally, decreasing the environmental effect of
transportation.
The museum employed low VOC (volatile organic compound) paints and
adhesives to enhance indoor air quality. It also contains a materials recovery facility
where biodegradable and non-biodegradable garbage may be appropriately
disposed of.

• Moderate daily temperature

The Mind Museum was constructed with curled-down roofs and sloping
walls to reduce direct sunlight and the heat island effect (HIE). A piece of the
museum's roof is covered with flora for further heat insulation. Most of the site's
pavement is comprised of highly reflecting materials to reduce HIE within the
museum and surrounding regions.
