INTRO

Good morning ma’am, classmates, let me start by identifying teachers as the creators of the
future, once they desire to destroy it, it will happen.

Preparing pre-service teachers is not easy of a task. It needs a lot of training and exposure
to teaching; and field study courses in college allow these practices to happen.

FOREIGN STUDIES

 According to Wilson in 2016, Field Study courses stressed personal experiences gained
by working with real world activities and challenges.
To go off site requires permission slips, busing, and figuring out how to deal with
behavior outside the normal classroom setting. Many teachers have only limited
experience doing field science themselves. It is intimidating to lead fieldwork if
you haven’t been through it yourself.

 In addition, according to Harry in 2021, the student teachers have to face real settings in
the teaching and learning process wherein the learned theories, principles, techniques,
methods and strategies are brought to life.
These first-hand experiences of the students enhance and improve learning,
increase understanding and knowledge. (Students have regular orientations that
are being done at the very first day of class regarding on the work Professional
Teachers are dealing with every day specially on values enhancement to
improve students’ attitudes and behavior for better performance.)

A well-organized field study is a foremost example of knowledge transfer. The new


layers of thought acquired by students through observation, interaction, and the narrative
provided by guides and lecturers, can be applied to day-to-day scenarios, and this includes
reaction papers and quizzes. Therefore, it helps them improve the retention of knowledge.

In fact, in 2019, a survey of Spafford H. (2019) showed that 53.78% of students strongly
agree that field study have helped to increase their knowledge base. A 2015 study
echoes this as it was proven that science-oriented field trips can improve the scores of
middle school students in science tests and increase their overall proficiency in the
subject matter. Interestingly, the ones who exhibited the biggest growth are poor
students and those belonging to ethnic minorities (Whitesell, 2015).

IN THE PHILIPPINES

However, in selected higher education institutions in CARAGA specifically in Surigao, there is a


need to increase the honoraria of resource teachers to compensate their efforts in sharing
inputs to the students of Field Study courses. Regular orientation and re-orientation should be
done among the students of Field Study courses on work and values enhancement to improve
students’ attitudes and behavior for better performance. (Patan 2013)

Furthermore, Education students in Pangasinan State University experience challenges in field


study courses which include tensions, interaction with students, dealing with the environment
and etc.

so this study aims to address a gap to contribute to a body on knowledge on PSU observations
experiences, and to give us a deeper elaboration of the statement of the problem, here is
