Stand-off design with grout

1 Introduction / background
The design for shear resistance to steel failure for stand-off with grout is very conservative according to design
method A of ETAG 001 Annex C [1] and EOTA Technical Report TR 029 [2]. For stand-off design with grout the
same approach is applied as for stand-off without grout.

2 Design concept for shear resistance to steel failure

According to investigations published in [3] the following basic equation has been derived in the draft EN 1992-4 [4]
for the characteristic shear resistance to steel failure for a fastener in presence of a grout layer for non-cracked
concrete:
0
(1) VRk,s = (1 – 0,01 · tgrout) · k · V Rk,s

VRk,s characteristic shear resistance to steel failure for a fastener in presence of a grout layer
V0Rk,s characteristic shear resistance VRk,s (shear resistance without lever arm) given in relevant ETA
tgrout thickness of the grout layer in mm
k factor to take into account of the ductility of steel
k = 1,0 for ductile steel (A5 > 8%)
k = 0,8 for non-ductile steel (A5 ≤ 8%)

The following conditions have to be observed:

• tgrout ≤ 40 mm
• No tension force on the base plate
• Fastener spacing in shear load direction > 10d (d = anchor diameter.)
• Grout is applied on roughened concrete surface according to EN 1992-1-1, section 6.2.5 [5]
• Compressive strength of grout ≥ compressive strength of base concrete and ≥ 30 N/mm2
• Static or quasi-static loads only
• Minimum grout shoulder = grout thickness (see Figure 1)
• Allowed anchor arrangements according ETAG 001 Annex C or EOTA Technical Report TR 029,
minimum of two anchors in load direction (see Figure 2).

Figure 3 shows the basic concept of the draft EN 1992-4 design compared to the design according ETAG.

3 Design concept for shear resistance to other failure modes

For the design resistance to other failure modes the grout is not considered. Only the part of the anchor embedded
into the concrete is relevant.
