The microstructural features and mechanical performance of aluminum matrix
composites incorporating titanium carbide as a reinforcement have a
significant dependency on the composition percentage, processing techniques
employed, and the intended application of the composites.
• Introduction
Titanium carbide (TiC) is a ceramic material with a very high melting point, high
hardness, and excellent wear resistance. It is often used as a component in
cutting tools, wear parts, and coatings to enhance their durability and
performance.
AL2024 is an aluminum alloy that contains copper, manganese, and magnesium asits main
alloying elements. It is commonly used in the aerospace industry due to its high strength-to-weight ratio,
good fatigue resistance, and good machinability.
• Properties (Al 2024)
1. High strength: Aluminum 2024 has a tensile strength of around 470 MPa
(68,000 psi), which is higher than many other aluminum alloys.
2. Good fatigue resistance: Aluminum 2024 has good fatigue resistance, which
makes it suitable for applications that require repeated loading and unloading.
5. Good weldability: Aluminum 2024 can be easily welded using common welding
techniques, such as TIG and MIG welding.
• Properties (Al 2024+TiC)
➢ TiC particles increase the density, hardness and tensile strength of
Al2024 composites, but decrease the elongation and impact
strength.
➢ TiC particles reduce the grain size of Al2024 matrix and form a
homogeneous distribution in the composites.
➢ TiC particles do not form any intermetallics with Al2024 matrix and
are free from chemical reactions.
