I. Objectives
At the end of a 45-minutes discussion, the learners should be able to:
a. Define disease agents.
b. Reflect the importance of understanding disease agents in
preventing the spread of communicable diseases.
c. Demonstrate proper hygiene practices to prevent the
transmission of disease agents.

Communicable diseases

c. Materials:

III. Procedures
A. Elicit
▪ The teacher will introduce the activity “Hygiene Chronicles.”
▪ The students will share a personal story about a time when you or
someone you know got sick because of not practicing proper
hygiene.

• Ask the students how did the illness impact the person's daily
life or routine?
• Tell the learners some advice to keep their body in any other
forms of illness.
B. Engage

▪ The teacher will begin with a brief discussion about what students
already know about germs. Ask questions like:
• What are germs?
• Where do you think germs come from?
• How do you think germs can make us sick?
▪ The teacher will show a short, attention-grabbing video of
disease agents or germs and ask the students to write a short
paragraph describing what they see and why it is important to
understand disease agents.

C. Explore
▪ In this point, the teacher will introduce an activity called
“Creating Disease Agent Posters.” This activity allows students to
research and visually represent different disease agents,
promoting their understanding of disease agents and their
importance in preventing the spread of communicable diseases.

Instruction: The teacher will divide the students into small groups.
Each group will be assigned a disease agent (e.g., bacteria, virus,
fungi). They will create a poster showcasing its characteristics,
mode of transmission, and prevention methods.
• What is the purpose of creating disease agent posters?
• How do disease agents contribute to the spread of
communicable diseases?
• What are some prevention methods for different disease
agents?

D. Explain
▪ The teacher will discuss/presents information about disease
agents and their characteristics, mode of transmission, and
prevention methods.
- What is a Disease? - Any undesirable deviation from an
organism’s normal physical or physiological condition is
referred to as a disease. Diseases usually have specific signs
and symptoms and are different from physical injuries in
nature.
- Communicable Disease - A communicable disease can be
transmitted from one person to another in several ways, such
as contact with blood or body fluids, inhalation of an airborne
virus, or insect bites. Infection, presence, and development of
pathogenic disease agents or germs in a specific human or
animal host are the causes of communicable diseases,
commonly referred to as infectious or transmissible diseases.
- Types of Common Disease agents or germs
1. Bacteria: They are microscopic, single-celled
organisms. Bacteria can be found practically
everywhere on Earth, including inside humans.
2. Viruses: Viruses are microscopic pathogens with
genetic material. They lack the intricate cell structure of
other diseases.
3. Fungi: Yeasts, moulds, and mushrooms are examples of
fungi, a type of organism. There are countless varieties
of fungus. However, only about 300 of them are
dangerous.
4. Protozoa: They are tiny, eukaryotic, single-celled
organisms. A few infections caused by the protozoan
include malaria and other immune system diseases.
- Causes of Disease agents or germs
1. Following infection by the pathogen, a person may get
a communicable disease. This could occur by way of:
2. Physical touch with a pathogen-bearing individual
3. Interaction with pathogen-containing body fluids
4. Catching a pathogen through someone else’s cough
or sneeze and breathing their droplets
5. Obtaining a pathogen-carrying animal or insect bite
6. Consuming contaminated food or water
- Prevention methods
1. Wash your hands well.
2. Cover a cough.
3. Wash and bandage all cuts.
4. Do not pick at healing wounds or blemishes, or
squeeze pimples.
5. Don't share dishes, glasses, or eating utensils.
6. Avoid direct contact with napkins, tissues,
handkerchiefs, or similar items used by others.
▪ The teacher will show a picture of hand indicating some of the
things that you can get a disease agent.
▪ Students can ask questions and participate in discussion.

E. Elaborate
▪ The teacher will be reminding students of the importance of
proper hygiene in preventing the spread of disease agents.
Emphasizing key practices such as handwashing, covering
coughs and sneezes, and maintaining personal cleanliness.
▪ The teacher will introduce a skit activity called “Get away.
Germs!”
Instructions: The teacher will divide the class into small groups.
Ask each group to brainstorm scenarios that involve everyday
situations where proper hygiene practices are crucial and
encourage creativity and realistic scenarios that students can
relate to. Each group will present their skit to the class,
focusing on proper hygiene practices.
▪ Ask students to share their observations and discuss the
impact of proper hygiene practices on preventing the
transmission of disease agents.
